Why the low score?

Well it doesn\'t look finished to tell the truth, and lots of CMON voters are extremely harsh and will rate a 2 or 3 on a WiP model.

The picture is very dark obscuring a lot of the detail work. The face is also a mess, which for nurgle fits, but just doesn\'t look very appealing. The black looks un-hilighted. The shaft of the axe looks like just black primer.
Personally I think this is better then tabletop. It looks like you have good brush control. The Shading on the green looks pretty good (though a bit thick). The shading on the fur is good. I would go with a 6.

undave i would say that the picture is also not the best and i hate to say it but, pictures are just important as the piece itself. many golden demon winners have actually only gotten a score of 6 or 7 only because of the picture. check out some of the picture tutorials in the articles sections and they should help you start to get those numbers up. hope this helps

To behonest its not even finished the boots and gloves are still black!
5-6 is tabletop quality so if youre achieving that, people think it only tabletop. 7-8 display quality and 9-10 Golden Demon/ Eavy Metal quality... hope this helps....

Hehe cheers guys. The black on the gloves boots is actually quite subtly highlighted and unfortuntely they get obliterated by the reflections from the lightsource so you can\'t tell they\'re there. At least they\'re in the right place tho. I\'m going to see if I can make one of those diffuser thingies and give it another go.

Why the low score ?
Composition hurts
The first look is important, and this mini doesn\'t catch the eye, compositionwise, nothing stands out, there is no focal point, exept the disturbing gloss on the green plates. The face looks nice, but the tone is too dark to stand out from the rest.
Black hurts:
Black is hard to work with, and even more to photo ( I think so, cause I do avoid Black.) so it often comes out as incomplete, even if you busted your arse applying \'subtle highlighting.\' I also think it\'s a very bad choice for the shading on the fur, looks like the primer shows trough. Only few things in life are really black, this guy has black gloves and boots, a black handle on his weapon, a black mask thingie a black cape...
I would probably overlook this one and give it 4-5 with no second taught in order to quickly get to the good pictures. No offense intended; with better composition it could have been a 6.

PS: I have a general tendancy to adopt the self excusing, over explaining tone myself, and I reckon it doesn\'t help with your score, and doesn\'t come out as the right attitude. Score on CMON involve far more than painting, I don\'t cut it myself, so I stopped caring; but still proudly post all my minis, cause I like what I do.

On your mini, never got to vote on this. I will downgrade a mini or not vote if I can\'t see it properly though. But I would bring out the armour a bit more as a focus and maybe do a couple of different other angles and put in montage
Be good if you can retake and post again so I can vote though.

Eavy Metal paintjobs aren\'t exactly to the painter\'s best standards, just look at Razza (Darren Latham) and his wickedtastic minis on his account here. They\'re way better than most Eavy Metal stuff you see in the books/magazine. Tammy Haye (back in the Minigrrrl days) was pretty awesome as well.
The Eavy Metal gaming standard is super clean with 2-3 hilights it seems. Their characters get more attention, but the figs are mainly supposed to look good and cohesive on the battlefield.
One of the truly random things I\'ve noticed with the Eavy Metal stuff is that the only LOTR figs where I like the sculpts all tend to be by far the best painted stuff in the studio The White Council for example

@Undave- you aren\'t alone mate, my photograpy often lets my minis down and it\'s a pain in the....!
I\'ve resolved to work as hard on improving my photography as I have on improving my painting, and am hoping to get some \'true\' shots of my latest mini... sounds like yours has a lot more going on than is evident from that photo too.
Now where did I put that cardboard box and old white sheet...?!
I actually got my ideas from this article which is pretty much the same as the one war paint links to. However this guy also expands into other areas like backgrounds etc. I\'ve yet to try out anything like this but that\'s cos I\'m bone idle and can\'t be bothered to go and pick up any greaseproof paper lol
