wilks WIP / quest for improvement log

Hey all,

I stopped painting 7 years ago, starting again this month and i set myself a couple of goals that i would like to log the quest for here!

-Get good tabletop+ standard aiming on polishing the fundamental techniques.
-Eventually paint display quality miniatures and get a 8+ rated model on here.

I picked up the age of sigmar box set (i love the models! all other politics aside) and am now working my way through painting them.

First, I'm working on the blood reavers. I would love some feedback on the first model please :) The base needs to be finished obviously, I'm thinking lava and some reflected light.. thoughts?

I struggled with the flesh and the helmet here. The helmet looks flat, the horns lack contrast also?

Any tips and pointers would be much appreciated! (criticism welcome, I'm looking to learn :) )

Cheers,
wilks

welcome :)

Good painting after a 7 year gap :good:
You have answered your own question - contrast, yep yep all about contrast. Over exagerate depth to make the minis pop, with 28mm the more contrast the better.

Hi, your painting is maybe good, but it is not visible on the photo. I have two things:
1. If you place light above a mini, you never take good photo, the shadows hides half of the mini. Place source of light closer to the camera as it is possible.
2. Try to avoid a glossy surface on the model.
It will be easier to help you with it.

Thanks Ten Ball / Persifal, i will do as you suggest for the photography.. an art in itself :)
Ill work on the contrast / base / photography and post update later.

I edited this comment to put in a photo that i hope is better.

One other quick bit of advice - don't get tied up in the scoring on this site. It's not what it used to be (not that it was ever perfect). Poor ten there had a mini under 5 due to malcontents, when it should have been much, much higher. But I won't drag your thread down with THAT albatross.
Good start - it's refreshing to get back into the hobby, and there's so much more to it now than there used to be.

Ok so slow progress with real life getting in the way. On these ones the red is complete, the rest is still WIP.. i think some progress on the red, but not happy with the feel of the mid tone of skin.

Im working on the photo closeups, i hope to get a better setup so bare with me for now please :D
