will this happen again?

I just got some Humbrol matt varnish spray today, gave it a test run and it coated the piece in a white powder look. I tried it again a few more times and it seems to be working fine now. Does anybody know why this happens and will it happen again?

Generally, humidity is the culprit. Dunno about Humbrol, but spraying Testors Dullcote in humid conditions gives you a very nice frosted effect.

Perhaps shaking the spray can to mix the aerosol and the varnish base also plays a part. I remember reading something about insufficient mixing of a cellulose based varnish causing a \'white powder\' effect, too, but I can\'t be sure about that.

a million and one variables reallymoisture in the ai temperature dust etc..... most often it is purely down to the amount of settling that has occured in the can before use.. new cans generaly do i for the first few sprays as they have had a long settling period... I have a kind of personal preference that goes along the lines of 30 seconds per week. meaning 30 seconds of vigorous shaking per wek the cans have been stood.

keep the can shaken regular and ALWAYS do a test before using.

it should be ok but there ae never 100% guarantees.
