Yes, I already wrote about it in my blog (link). I will write about it again because it PISSES ME OFF.

Why am I not employable? I do not want much. Pay me 4€ an hour, I\'ll work for that! No problem. Hell, I\'d let you punch me for a buck. I ahve been looking for a student job for three years now and it seems utterly impossible to get one. Everybody finds jobs, why can\'t I? My most recent disaster: I go to my first shift, incredibly happy to have found hard, badly paid and crappy work, just to find out that the woman who employed me got \"laid off\" and the contract will not be honored.
I have worked for people who denied my pay for no reason at all, even saying that I am a great employee, but contrary to the gigantic sign that says \"Help desperately wanted\" help is actually not wanted, paying help is wanted even less and why am even standing in this office? Remember, I have worked a week for this little gem to happen. Six hours a day, six days a week. I only got paid after threatening them with legal actions (not that I could afford that) and then it was only half of what we agreed upon.

WHY is it so IMPOSSIBLE for someone with a good work ethic who speaks two languages and programs in 5 to find a job? Do I smell? Is it the deformation on my leg that can only be seen when I undress? Do my ears cause spontaneous explosions I have not yet noticed and people don\'t want me around for fear of death? Is it just a plot to keep me from getting my university diploma?

First of all what kind of Job are you looking for ??

These past two summer I\'ve had no probleme finding a job, but I haven\'t been picky, which means not an office job but jobs in construction or on the factory floor beeing payed minimum wage. Quit frankly I don\'t mind, I\'d rather do that than be mister photocopy in some bank. But a lot of my friends who try a find a job during sumer don\'t find it because they are expecting some uber interesting job in a cushy office just because they are doing (really) good studies. So lecon one, search where they need people : Construction, factories where peope are going on vacation, ect.....

The reason I\'m saying that is because in your post you put emphasis on speaking two languages and beeing able to programme. Well bottom line, student job don\'t require skills, they don\'t want skilled people because they are usually smart enougth to make them feel bad and tell them what they are doing wrong. So when I\'m looking for a job I skip the part where I speak 3 languages, am a student in b school, and all that.

Second thing that would come to mind is appereance. One of those stupid non written rule of employement is that to have a chance to be employed you must not have your employer dislike your appeareance. Meaning that visible tattoos, big beards, long hair, piercings , ect. all have to go. Sad, but most of the time true.

And lastly, I\'ve learned not to be afraid to use your friends/family to find a job. I used to be pretty uncomfortable doing that, but in the end if you\'re not going to do it someone els will, and since it\'s a student job I\'m seaking and I know I can do the job as well or better than the next guy, I decided that using contacts wasn\'t such a bad thing :p

Good luck :D

I can relate. Sort of.
When I lost my tech support job, I went right back on the job hunt, and it took
me nearly a whole year to find the job I\'ve got, now. Moving furniture.
Frenchkid gives good advice, there.
It\'s a bit annoying, but appearance will often be a factor. First impressions count.

Check your local papers for \'first come first serve\' cash labour jobs.
I don\'t know if they\'re very common, but here in T.O., there are companies that
get their general labourers in this manner.

Must have: Work boots, work gloves.
Truck pulls up. Climb on. Work all day.
Get paid cash.

You work like a dog pulling a trailer load of raw iron, but for casual labour, they
get to write off the expense, and six to ten guys get the satisfaction of earning
some money for good, honest work.

Germany, huh? I\'ll check with my wife.
She\'s got lots of family out there. Might serve as potential contacts, if they\'re close
enough.

I can answer this in two words:

Bloody students lol

I\'m assuming you\'re working over in German-land though mate, so I don\'t know if the legislation for employment is much different, but considering we\'re all in the EU it can\'t be all that dissimilar...

Have you tried applying for work through an agency...?

Unless, working at a university, or construction type job, this is too true.

Cut the hair, shave the beard.

I know it sucks, it kind of hurts the pride, but you\'ll find you have much more pride when you\'re able to pay your bills.

Iv been looking for a job all summer but havn\'t managed to get one.

Iv handed in about 10 CV\'s to butchers, blockbuster, cinema\'s, little art shop, music stores, Waterstones etc...
Nothing.
(I already have a job, but it\'s one day a week and they won\'t give me overtime :( )

But then Im in Newcastle and this place is packed to the brim with students, probably not enough obs to go round. Iv even started applying for xmas temp.

Try applying for an airport security job in the USA. Based on outward appearances, they will take anyone with a pulse!

Seriously though, not sure what to suggest for employment in Germany. If you don\'t mind being a guinea pig and are near a big medical center, you could participate in research studies, although that doesn\'t help you much in the long term.

mosch, factory work is the easiest and appearance isn\'t strict.
it\'s honest hard graft for an okay wage (often pays more than retail)

well, i look like a platypus, and i have two jobs!!! actually, check my profile for a pic, and you will see that i am not the guy that anyone thinks of when they out out a help wanted sign(unless it\'s a head shop)...
it seems like you have had a lot of time on your hands this summer, and since you can program, there is no reason not to make a little website and sell all the minis you have painted in your spare time...
:cussing: jobs suck...work is a four letter word...the only job that i have enjoyed in my life was as a bouncer in a dutch coffeeshop(yes, some shops have bouncers to keep away the pickpockets and drunks who cause trouble for the stoners...as well as to be a general gopher for the dealer and bar girl)...2 & 1/2 years gettin\' paint to smoke, and flirt with hot french girls all day....very nice...even that got old after a while though...
there is the thing about bein\' careful what you wish for, as you just might get it...since i\'ve been a studio painter in the biz for the last four years, it has taken a lot of the fun out of paintin\'...bein\' told what to paint, what colors to use, havin\' a deadline, and the paintjobs havin\' to be as good or better than the last paintjob(no matter the sculpt or colourscheme) is a drag sometimes...
plus it doesn\'t pay that well, thus the second job...i manage an apartment building in the ghetto...full of worthless drunks and crackheads...i have to deal with stuff gettin\' stolen all the time(someone stole my kitten last weekend!!!)...i have to enforce the rules with a tire iron(you can talk to me, or you can talk to ol\' blacky!!!), and carry a 9mm just in case...
makes me look back on the days of bein\' unemployed with fondness...
so be careful what ya wish for, you might just get it, and hate it!!!

cheers
jah

First of all what kind of Job are you looking for ??

My honest answer would be \"French aristocrat before the revolution\" but since this is kinda hard to get I\'d take anything. Well, pretty much anything, I\'m not going into prostitution (though I would happily work at a bordello not selling my body) and... well, that\'s pretty much it.

I\'d gladly do any job. I have no illusions about work being fun (well, sometimes it might be) or not having to work hard. I applied for carrying parcels at UPS (several times already) - no chance. I tried to get work on the Cranger Kirmes, a really large fair around here, and was unsuccesful for the third year in a row. I said I was available whenever for anything and any payment. No offers. A friend\'s girlfriend offered to work only on weekends on jobs with no heavy lifting and for at least I don\'t know how much per hours and can\'t even begin to count the offers she gets. So men are not wanted? I check if people to assemble and disassemble the rides are needed. The signs say they are, but nobody wants me (or my friend for that matter).
Well, that\'s not entirely correct. Every year I get a single offer, I get told I am hired and the next day the guy calls me and tells me he\'s hired a random girl that just went by and probably essed his dee, if you catch my drift, and that I am not needed anymore. This has happened every year so far.
I feel kinda cursed.

I mentioned this because, if I may say so, I am not dumb and learn quickly. In theory I would dare to say I am suited to many jobs. Everybody can do heavy lifting (and I gladly would too), I have some more options - which never come into play it seems.

You know how I look ;) I have long hair which I will not cut, but I keep it clean and regurlarly have it trimmed and always remind that I would happily wear it in a ponytail which is my \"talking to potential employers hairstyle\" anyway. I take care of my beard as well - I am not Karl Marx by any means, but I have some facial hair. I cut off the strays and thin my beard when it gets too thick. I may not look good or even remotely touch the beauty ideal, but I am well groomed.

Have you tried applying for work through an agency...?

Yes, of course. Usually I get no response at all and if I keep following up I constantly get the answer that I should not call and they\'ll tell me if they have work for me. I have no faith in the German \"agency of employment\" (I think that\'s a euphemism) at all.

I just can\'t. Call it pride or whatever you want, but I don\'t think I could just get rid of something that defines me for a better job chance. I am clean and well groomed, but I have long hair and a beard. I like the way I look eventhough I know that the rest of the world disagrees with me :D To me, removing this feels the same as if someone said \"go get a circumcision if you want a job\".

I thought about this too actually, but the companies I have seen do not seem too reputable and my health is far more important to me than a quick buck. Most would probably not work with me anyway considering that I have a damaged immune system anyway (always had it since birth).

Orginal gepostet von generulpoleaxe

Have a look at my gallery. So you really think people would pay for this crap? I actually tried it before though, I could never even get the cost of the raw mini (which by all logic means that my paintjobs actually lower the quality of miniatures thus giving GW a reason to send me a stern letter :D).

Orginal gepostet von jahminis
:cussing: jobs suck...

Laying on other people\'s pockets sucks even more...

Orginal gepostet von jahminis

\"I wish for infinity hamburgers!\" :D
Usually I don\'t get what I wish for. I got Cheryll which is pretty the best thing (um. Person.) I ever got in my life, but I didn\'t actually wish for her. I would not have dared to utter a wish for something I don\'t think I could ever deserve.
However, for the sake of the fool\'s hope...
\"I wish for a job inside my moral bounds that allows me to support myself at least a little.\"

Stole. Your. Kitten.
Are you serious?

Well, thanks for your answers, everyone. Fact is I don\'t really have a bad life. I have a good standard of life... which my parents pay for. I have access to the internet to talk to you guys, I have food and clothing, we own a house (which is rarer here in Germany than it is in America, by the way) and I\'m pretty sure that my parents would pay the rest of my fees if I actually could not pay my university bills. I have a (already kinda lower class, meaning newer games won\'t run on it) PC and several video game consoles (granted they are old ones mostly - which I love dearly). I live in luxury.
But I want to be able to afford this on my own, not because my parents see that I\'m struggling and give me something...

Strangely, ranting really calms my nerves. I like that.

I called Gamestop today and asked if there was any chance with my application. He reiterated that, no, in fact I had no chance, but Gamestop in Bochum would eagerly be looking for work slaves.
So I phoned Gamestop Bochum. Everybody knows what the answer was, right?
\"What? Na. We have too many people here as it is already. What he said was... not.... totally correct.\"
Sure, I understand you won\'t say that he happily told me a lie so I would get off his back - it\'s not a nice thing to say about a collegue.
When I told this to Mr Apply in Bochum he was not really fazed at all which kinda caught me off guard. He just asked me if I wanted my papers back.

Well... I kinda did strike a deal though. I will bring another application to Bochum tomorrow. Herne and Bochum both assured me they would be calling as soon as any openings present themselves.

Hope dies last, but I\'m not holding my breath.

Hey, I hope this Gamestop does work for you. But you could always call into your local Games Workshop, even though having long hair and a beard isnt dirty (I have long hair for a guy), there have been many people with hair down to their asses who have worked down at my local GW. I reckon if you have a clean criminal record, and are happy to go to work with the hobby every day, then they\'ll take you. And don\'t worry about your own verdict on your painting skills, there have been guys who I have seen paint bad and work at Games Workshop too..

I know how you feel about the hair Mosch.

In our bogan little town of Wagga Wagga, we have 3 Mcdonalds stores.
At the store on the main street (my first job) i had long hair, and i got next to no shifts (there were other factors too, but i think my hair was the big one).
Basically, i was getting screwed around by everyone, and i mean everyone on staff.
after about a year and a half of this, i got myself transferred over to the Kooringal store (which is in my suburb). i cut my hair, shaved regularly, did the whole \'clean myself up\' thing and now things are okay. i am working with people who (for the most part) are okay, and i\'m working a decent amount of hours for a decent amount of pay.

I know you don\'t want to shave the beard and hair, but you might have to.
you could always grow it back straight after you get a job anyway.
