I saw in a Computer magazine a couple years ago some sometists built a working violin only 7 microns long. You could only see the thing under a microscope and supposedly it could actually be played but the sound would be to faint to hear.


It probably only cost the American people 100 million in tax dollars to accomplish.:rolleyes:

Actually probably not. I doubt that out government is interested in microscopic violins. Was probably a privately funded organization...

@Tylith - The scinetists were working at a University. Research scientists are almost always working on government grants.:mad:

Research scientists hardly ever work on government funds. Its private organisations (often defence, transport and pharmaceutical companies) that pay grants. although in the case of the defence companies they are usually working on government contracts that pay for the development work. So ultimately the government pays, but the private company carries the risk and work.

As to why build a 7 micro long violin. It was a test case for nano technology. We\'ve been able to build such small structures for sometime, but the violin offered a number of unique problems particularly the mechanics of a vibrating string that small.

If you want to talk about really small, then a few years ago there were a couple of physicists who won the nobel prize for creating a technique that allowed you to manipulate INDIVIDUAL ATOMS to build structures. (Molecular nanotechnology) To put this in context, imagine the Statue of libery in the eye of a needle, then imagine a scaled down visitor standing on the gallery around the torch, holding up a needle with another scale statue of libery in the eye.... and thats still HUGE and ENORMOUS compared to atomic scale...
