Where is a good place for me to order some windsor and newton brushes (series 7) online? Also which ones do i order the mini brushes or the other ones?
I live in USA so i dont really want to pay a fortune for customs and so forth....any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i wouldn\'t recommend buying online generally. i\'m sure someone can show you some good online shops but i woulnd\'t buy a brush without being able to test the bristles

I have to agree. I got some DaVinci brushes on order and was not happy with the quality despite their reputation.

To answer your question, you can get them at www.dickblick.com

A cheaper alternative that is probably just as good is to get some of Rune Kappels new line of brushes at www.kaple.dk

I have been in the market for better brushes for a while now, but after looking at the prices for W&N series 7 brushes and Kaples, I think I will stick with my \"cheeper\" brands. :(

Cadian, that\'s strange. That often happens with synthetic brushes. I\'ve never seen that happen to kolinsky sable before though. Sure you didn\'t get glue on it, or accidentally leave it tip down in a glass or something?

Honestly thats what I thought to; but they really are amazing to use.

interestingly enough i was going to post a thread about this exact problem. my brushes get bendy tipped, fast. i try to keep very good care of my brushes: i never leave them in water, or leave paint on them, but they always get snakey - even the best, non synthetic brushes ive bought. any ideas about what i can do to stop it?

Holding it under a cold running tap after each session and then shaping it to a point, and keeping the little plastic tube thing on it whenever you\'re not using it maybe... I haven\'t the faintest clue what\'s causing the problem though...

Are these pure sable brushes, like series 7, or the mixed sable/synthetic brushes, like Sceptre Gold? The W&N series 7 brushes shouldn\'t bend unless you abuse them, whereas the Sceptre Gold brushes deteriorate rather quickly, in my experience. The Sceptre Gold brushes are much cheaper than the series 7 ones, but probably get more expensive in the long run.

I\'m facing problems with bendy tips - i have only citadel brushes and som other ones, not the fine stuff you do.

The strange thing is that i have a 0 brush i had forever - the tip is perfect and i usually paint an entire miniature with it. I bought a new one of thoose but the new one is crap - i bent almost instantly and i can assure you i never overloaded it or did anything weird with it.

I guess it\'s uneven quality or just a bad hair day on some brushes, like when you buy an new car and it breaks down on the way home :)

So i ordered some kaple brushes, hopefully they are up to the job.

Crap brushes with synthetic bristles WILL curl or split no matter how well you care for them. There are better quality synthetic brushes that will hold the tip for longer, but eventually they curl too (I\'ve never had a synthetic brush that didn\'t eventually curl or split, at least).

I\'ve never tried Kaple\'s brushes, but at least they are real sable so they won\'t have the same problems synthetic brushes have. I think I\'ll try some of his brushes next time I need a new brush.

I use W&N Series 7\'s and they are fine. I agree with Seth in they must be looked after. I always clean them thoroughly with a brush cleaner - looks like soap in a pot! I then form them into a point and replace the protective tube. Might sound a bit anal, but it works! Also, genuine W&N brushes are not cheap so you can\'t afford to mess about with them.

I tend to paint a whole figure with a size 1. I used to think that using a smaller brush (0 or 00)would work better \'cos of the size of the models, but I was wrong. You can never pick up enough paint, plus what you have picked up dries really quickly and makes your painting uneven. With a large brush you can lay down much smoother lines because it holds so much more. Having said that, you need to make sure you don\'t flood the model!

Back to the question..... I would have thought that there would be a local art store nearby? If they don\'t stock the particular brushes you want, I am sure they would order them in for you? I buy from Ken Bromley art supplies (online) and never have any problems - their prices can be up to 30% off retail. I cannot imagine that they would send out sub-standard brushes - afterall, they will want to make sure you buy from them again. The brushes are also packed very well, even for delivery within the UK.

Bendy sables... I don\'t understand that. Funny thing is, I was given a Series 7, which was \'damaged\'. A glob of spittle, some reshaping, and 24 hours later it was like new. My brushes always get washed with shampoo, followed by conditioner. I hope to never buy another one. :)

If you really cannot find a retailer near you, try www.dickblick.com. That\'s the place to go for Series 7\'s.

A few have mentioned the \"bendy tip\" syndrome. (Must risist pun and not mention any of Rafael Palmeiro\' endorsments)

I use this Master\'s Brush Cleaner and Preserver. It preserves tensles strenght of the brush quite nicely and does extend the life of any brush. (I\'ve even restored some of my older brushes with this stuff)

The stuff works great, I truly abuse my Series 7, I\'ve had over a year and is still in mint condition. Without it I would have ruined the brush in month 3.

On the topic of:
Cheap Vs. Expensive brushes

There is an old saying \"Buying cheap is expensive!\".

A cheap brush will cost you $4 and last a few months at best. While a series 7 cost $16 and last over a year. Also during that whole time you will have a brush that gives you great brush control.

I know, I\'ve taken the cheap route for years and regret doing so.
In the end it\'s your choice, but you have been advised.

If you live in \"The OC\" :) (I hate that show) or in any part of SoCal, I recomend The Art Supply Warehouse in Westminter, CA. If not then here is there website: http://www.artsupplywarehouse.com/

This is another shop where you can get these brushes, I think they are cheaper, but it depends on how many you get :D
