Winter is coming - need a good quality light

OK, winter is now firmly here in the UK, and that means that I need to do my painting when it is dark, since I am at work when it is light. Previously I’ve always just used a normal table lamp for my lighting, but this has always left me with poor quality painting due to the substandard light.

Since I’m on a push at the moment to improve the standard of my painting I’m looking for a good quality light and was wondering what other people use? I’ve heard good things of OTT lights, but can people recommend any other brands?

OTTs provide good light - you can see the huge improvement in colour rendering in the side-by-side comparison images they publish - but there's a fairly consistent gripe about them: not bright enough. Using two or more, the first obvious solution, really makes for an expensive lighting setup! Not easy to get outside of North America anyway so best to look at something else for the UK.

Wow, £130 is a little more that I'd want to spend. I had hoped that £80 would get me a good one. Seen a few on the craftlight page - I'd already looked at them. They have a OTT light at 18watts, being 5 watts higher than the other OTT it "should" be brighter so that might be the one to go for. Thank you both for the tips.

How does £6-10 grab you?

You're quite right to baulk at forking out £130, that's just... Way. Too. Much. Like I said in the other thread, all you're really buying in most cases is the bulb. Find a good one and any existing lamp it fits into becomes your new light.

a bulb is important, not the lamp itself as Einion said

What is most important,
light is close to daylight (5000-6000 K)
light is very bright, one of this is even more then You need
it doesen't increase temperature
You will save on your electricity bills :)

I payed 20GBP including shipping. Lamp You can buy anywhere, just remember to take the lamp with port E27 (most common)

Thanks for the info guys. Having the same prob with the decrease in light and have started getting annoyed at having to stop painting so early. Will have to run down to our local lighting store and grab a bulb :)
