I heard the news on Tuesday, and have been squeeing ever since. In regards to it becoming another Merlin or Seeker, well... the leaked pilot script seems to be very true to the book, the cast and crew are great, the author is happy with it, and the ExProds are actually getting feedback and casting suggestions from the fan community over at the Westeros page. Plus, come on, it's HBO, people! Which to me means the series is pretty much bound to be awesome, and the only thing to fear is a premature cancellation after two seasons (Yes, I'm somewhat biased, thanks for asking).
Honestly, if this comes even close to the books, we have a winner, 'cause the books are great and if you don't think so you must be stoopid. /yahtzee

ETA: SPOILER ALERT:
The pilot ends with "The things I do for love", for heaven's sake! *glee*

Highly likely, since the BBC is co-funding the production (similar to Rome). The only concerns would be whether the BBC will learn from Rome's mistakes and refrain from:
- Airing the episodes six months (!) later and basically killing their ratings due to streaming and bootleg copies and
- Re-editing the episodes to the point of incoherency in order to trim them down to one hour slots.
