NCO WIP - Curent project: Horus

So I need a bit of a break from Imperial deviancy in the form of the Knight so dug out a model I was bought for a birthday a few years back, the lovely R'alai battlesuit.


Ive begun with the basic prep FW models need (this one seems to really have been hit with the missmould/airbubble stick so lots of knight and green stuff. Ive tried to go for a pretty upright pose as I want him standing proud:



Next onto the base. Im bored with the grim Imperial city style (or the standard fighting in a field) bases so I thought Id try for a Tau colony. Not sure if Tau would have roads but I decided in my mind they do so Ive tried to make a "curb" between a road and a sidewalk.





Not sure if the base is a bit plain. Need to have a think.... Any opinions?

Some thinking about it and yeah, the base is too boring. I was thinking about some battle damage but its too easy to go over the top. So that made me think about putting something else suitably tau looking on the base and then to what should be on a tau "street". Maybe some tau pedestrians but that seemed a little silly. Walking to the shops in a daydream (and nearly face-planting a post while texting) I may have found my answer, a Tau street light. Yes I know they probably have nightvision on any vehicles but hopefully rule of cool will prevail. Its also a chance to try out playing with some lights (something Ive seen others do very well). So heres the basic shape and detail and then the "middle" with the space for any wires I will need.

Busy with work preparing students for their exams so this has been pretty slow going. Ive also been waiting for a delivery (will be revealed later :p).


The two halves of the street light have been glued together after the internal part was greenstuffed and then stuck together. Ive drilled through my base and then attached it over the hole. Just waiting for it to dry and then I will get painting.

Thanks dude.

Ive got the base painted. I didnt want it to be battle damaged but to show some signs of natural wear and tear. I went for a dusting of weathering pigments and then rain-spots on the light. Im not sure if there is enough highlighting or if it needs something more? Id welcome some opinions....





I've also got the streetlight wired up. I wanted to do something new with the project and this seemed a good way to go. So a trip to the electronics store and some soldering later:

Bit of an update. Not had a chance to get lots done but I have wet blended the red for the armour on the main body (still have the arms and head to go). Ive also started a little bit on the bone colour for the joints. Still lots to do (white freehand for markings and need to make a decision on a colour for the jump jets, gun and shield).

I was planning on a more gradual updating but I seem to have gotten a bit carried away... Woops. So the majority of the model is done now. It just needs a little battle damage (nothing too over the top) and some freehand symbols. Not sure where yet. Definitely on the gun and the gun small "shield". Probably some on the main shield as well. Probably just see where the mood takes me. Hopefully it will be finished next time I post.

So the commander is done! Really happy with the blending and the tau writing. Turned out better than I was expecting. Really pleased with the light. Never used this type of wire before and it looks like a light without affecting the model too much (which Ive found a problem in the past!).

Yay! So Horus has finally been delivered. Such an awesome model. Even having seen pictures I couldnt quite believe the level of detail.


Well I intend this evening to be a geektastic combination of film watching (X-men first class is on) and something a bit more scary. I want to grind out the inside of Horus's torso and then drill up through his straight leg so that I can put an LED or electroluminescent wire in his chest that will light up the lower region of his face in red.

I have the model cleaned and my dremel. I also have the bits (not sure if I will need them all):



I just seem to find myself procrastinating. I think Im a bit worried about starting....

So Ive taken the cowards approach and done the easy bit first. This is the hole that will house the battery. The wires will then go through the other part of the base and up through the leg.





OK. Dont think I have anything more to do without getting on with the torso. Here goes!

Thanks. Having finished the grinding I can now agree with your sentiment as it was only feeling scary until I was done :p

By the time I was finished it was about 1am and just crashed last night. So quick photo this morning. I have to say I wish I had kept all of the resin that had been ground out of the chest because it really was a lot. Had me surprised at points. Ive had to put the wires in as I cant fit the LED up the leg so Im going to need to paint the model with the LED in place (I will just cover it with some bluetac).





Now to get soldering!

Oh, does anyone know how I can change the name of this thread? I changed the name of the first post thinking that would do it but it hasnt.... Any help would be really appreciated.

That is a fantastic model, and your plans sound grand. Hope it all works out, if so it'll look fantastic. Good luck
