Hi all,

Firstly please be gentle, this is my first thread here so take it easy on me!

I'm currently painting a Slaaneshi Dragon Ogre Shaggoth for a painting competition at my local GW (Manchester Arndale) called 'Battle of the Brush'.

In short, I get a month to paint up any model to fit a theme, in this case 'Monsters or Monsterous Creatures'.

Apologies for the slightly out of focus pictures, they were taken with my mobile phone.

I'm looking for a way to really lift it above my normal painting standard and figure this is the best place to get advice!

I hope you like the model so far and would really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions as to how I can take it a step further.

Best,

The Council of 13.

It looks good so far, but since its a slaanesh dogre i would give the purple some more umph....overboard on the pastels is the way to go

On Slaaneshi stuff I always think that having the ends of the limbs (hands, feet...um etc) as a different colour to the main body works well. If the body is pale, a smooth transition to black hands and feet works nicely. If the model is dark (as yours is) maybe you could blend as smoothly as you can down the forearm/shins/end of tail to a very pale pastel pink? If you did, black claws for contrast might also help.

Or, you could push the highlights all over to a pinkish colour, and go the black route for the extremities.

Or, ignore me completely - many do (particularly those who know me well :) )

Welcome to the madness....nice work so far....I might suggest bumping up the pink factor under the tail as you go. Good luck with the Monster Madness

Again id say push the purple skins highlights up a little more. Also the beard is looking very blue? Might be because im on a phone.

Hi all and thanks very much for the suggestions.

I can definitely push up the highlights on the dragon skin, I'll also be doing more glazing around the scales to smooth out the transition between the purple and flesh tones.

I'm not really very good with blending, so could you guys direct me to a tutorial? It's definitely a skill I'd like to learn.

The other area I think needs work is the axe head, I'll post a picture soon of what I've done so far, but I think such a large open space demands some kind of freehand, would love to hear your suggestions.

Best,

I struggled with blending a lot (and still do, if Im honest) but this tutorial was the one where the concept kinda clicked for me.
http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/32050-how-to-blend-by-olliekickflip/

There are lots of ways to blend, but I find this one fairly intuitive. It may take a while before understanding kicks in, but just give it a try and keep going until it starts to work. A lot of it is just about doing it yourself, and from your pics it looks like youre well on the way already.

The axe is nice, but I would add some shading to it so that the face of the axe head isnt all the same colour. Maybe thinned black paint (not ink) with some purple mixed in, so that as it gets darker it also gets matter (real shadows on metal do this - the darker it gets the less reflective it becomes)

After looking again I kinda feel that the scaly parts and the skin parts could do with being differentiated more from each other. As has been mentioned a fair bit, further highlighting on the skin (up to either lilac or pink) would help a lot with this.

hope that helps :)

Its nice to see another newbie posting their work, the more the merrier - there are many other new people here posting work so you're not on your own. Shaggoth is a nice model and yours looks pretty good. The base looks nice - simple and yet effective, very dusty colours which work with the main model (tidy up those bottom edges though!). The colour scheme on the main model is nice, but as others have said, blending needs to be smoother and the colours need to "pop" a little more to bring this one more to life. But good job and keep working on it! This forum has an article section where you can find many tutorials on blending and just about anything else you care to mention. And nearly forgot, the axe is nice, but again needs some deeper shadows and stronger highlighting going on to make it stand out, both on blade and haft.

Thanks very much again for the feedback guys, and for linking to that tutorial, it's really given me some food for thought!

I just discovered last night that I might not be able to make the competition that I started this model for. Really disappointed, but still going to put the effort into the mini and see what I can learn from it.
