WIP Dwarf Lord

Here is a dwarf I am working on and I just wanted to get some feedback on him. I only have a front picture of him but I hope no one minds. I have not started on the back yet. Feel free to tell me whatever: what you think of the color, the actual painting, etc. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I am trying out new metallics and oxidation, stuff I have never really done. It is hard because it is like I am trying to learn how to paint all over again. Hopefully with enough practice, and critiques, I will get a whole lot better.

The patina on the armour looks great. The hair could use a little more variation from light to shade (more shade on the lower endsof the braids, similar to the shading on the axe). The gems seem a bit dull to me and the color doesn\'t seem to fit, but that may just be me.

Ya I am not too good at painting gems. I will have to look up an article about that to get it right.
I was also thinking the same thing about the hair. I will try to shade it more.

i think the skin looks great-one question though. Is the area around the eyes painted like that or is that a shadow from the lighting of the photo?
if its painted like that, i would try and lighten that area a little..looks a little too dark imo. gives the mini a real dark mean feel...personally, i dont see dwarves in that manner...other that that, metals look good, keep it up.

The shadow created around the eyes is from the actual lighting. I took the photo in my kitchen and the only light I have in there is from the ceiling. The actual eye socket are not that dark. I am almost finished with him so I will post up a new picture probably in a day or so. Thank you guys, and girls if there are any, for commenting! :flip:

Looks great.
Only one thing bugs me a little and that is the choice of grey for the leather on the axe handle. Not sure, but it looks a little out of place and too bright.

Otherwise, great stuff and a nice overall hue to the mini. Well done so far.

The painting is great! The only problem is the light levels between the parts. Right now the axshaft is focal point. If you put alot more light on the skin and especially the face, the figure will be more easily read as I suppose it is the face that you want to be in focus. It will also help if the beard is more shaded and the brilliance is increased as it will make the hair look more realistic. Hair is almost as brilliant as skin. Other from that is looks very good, especially the metallics and patina.

I agree with you guys about the axe. The color is a little too bright and its dominating the front of the mini. I am probably going to repaint it but I do not want to use brown. I have a VMC color called dark bluegrey, maybe that will tone it down and bring out the face more. I will also add some more highlight to the face. Thanks so much for your help everyone!

it looks good, although, the green-blue oxidation(at least thats what it looks like for me) is a little too strong imo. I would water it down heavily, like maybe 4:1 and paint it in very thin \"glazes\". Its alot easier to add more paint if theres not enough, keep that in mind when adding things like that to the mini. I think if you re work the oxidation a little and make it more subtle, you can acheive the look of oxidation and make the mini look much better. The skin looks good, it\'d be nice to see some subtle red on the cheeks/nose on the dwarf.-the frowning/angry face of his would seem to bring some blood to the cheeks, also because hes resting his head on the axe, his fair skin would seem to redden easy...Although, all that rambling about the skin is my interpretation on how you could add some character... Other than that, hair looks nice...lets see a nice base for this guy!, good job so far!

Those metals are great. Any chance of sharing your recipes for them? It looks like you\'re using Jade Green for the oxidation, which is turning out awesome by the way. I might have to crack one of my treasured old pots to try that instead of using Scaly Green.

Speaking of bases do you have any recommendations on what I should make it? I have no idea!

As for the oxidation I realized that it was not watered down enough after I applied. It looked too caked on. I will try to rework it if I do not get too lazy.

Since I am trying to learn how to give my miniatures more character I will go back and see if I can redden his hand without screwing it up. I have a bad habit of over doing things.

I am also going to change the color of the axe handle. I\'ll either make it a dark grey blue color or dark brown. I want his beard to pop.

The recipe for the metals is dwarf bronze mixed with a little Vellejo Model Color (VMC) chocolate brown. It is then shaded with pure chocolate brown and then some dark angels green is added to the mix for the deep shadows. Highlighting is done with pure dwarf bronze and then pure shining gold. The extreme highlight is shining gold mixed with a little mithril silver. The oxidation is done with VMC emerald. I love that color!
