WIP Eldar in Acid Rain

Well, about two hours of painting later my armor plates and such are now some kind of ashen gray colour. I'll stick with bone colour for the ornaments and I'll give a try to silver NMM on the sides of armour plates and hope I won't suck too much at it. Of course there's also the loincloth and the hair to do too. Those'll probably get a nice magenta/dark red finish. Well, more painting tomorrow and over the weekend.

They are very expertly painted. But i dont like the idea of grimy, dirty eldar. If they stay long enough on a battlefield to get dirty, they are doing something very uneldar like in my book

Some minor work done again. I'll have to finish up the bone parts, maybe brighten up over highlights over all and then move on to the NMM. And then the gems and the base. And the spear. I also glued the Dire Avengers on their bases which also require some minor painting and pigments.

On another note, I'll have to make some kind of a photo booth. The lighting in my new apartment is plain crap for photos. Might have to go to Ikea for some cheap lamps and other stuff...

I made the lightbox today. It works quite well with my cheapish camera and was also dirt cheap. I bought some lamps and a box from Ikea and then made a backdrop and a bottom from foamcore and some spray paint. And that plinth is also a spray can cap sanded and painted matt black. All in all the materials cost me around 20€ and it took me about half an hour to make. Not bad I think.

And here are some test photos. They actually look quite a lot better than the old ones. You can almost see detail in these. And they also reveal to me the work I still have to do on these models... Which is good, sort of...

Dude! That's a brilliant idea for the lightbox! Does a good job at diffusing the light. Oh and lovely, lovely paint jobs all around

Hi,

No new close-ups but here's some pictures of my mostly completed armies for the 500pts games we'll be having this month. There's still some final work to be done on the Dark Reapers, I'll have to paint the gems on the Farseer and and pigments and dirt to pretty much everything.

Great looking army so far, and agree that not enlough eldar are dark and gritty like the rest of the 40k universe, i may have to resurrect some of my own after seeing this - thanks for the inspiration!

Currently under not so minor influence of booze, but still painting and doing stuff. I have about a week to finish these off. Plus a unit of Fire Dragons. The battle damage was achieved with careful use of styrofoam, plastic bits, pumice and minor flame abuse.

Anyways, they look nice to me. Currently I'm applying some oil paints to the Storm Guardians, hoping to get all the green gooey stuff done in an hour or two. Let's see what happens. The Storm Guardians consist mostly of Guardian and Dire Avenger bits plus some Skaven knives and swords. The weapons will be painted mostly black, white helmets and I'll call them finished. Hopefully. Anyways, wish me luck so I can get these finished.

That battle damage looks great. The lighter coloured one looks like it just barely survived something pretty nasty.

that is some really nice battle damage! Any chance of a quick how-to? I really like how there's no sign of the kit actually being hollow. Very nice work :)

1. I outlined the area where the BFG shot should have burned through the Serpents armor. I imagined it would be a huge laser/plasma type weapon and the pointy-eared pilot had barely managed to dodge the shot to avoid complete destruction.

2. I took out my trusty Dremel-copy with a circular blade and cut away a piece somewhat along the lines I had drawn.

3. I smoothed out and angled the edges with a carving tool so that they would blend in with the stuff I filled the hole with.

4. I filled the hole with some sort of foam people also use for flower arrangement. It's light so the Serpent should still stay relatively straight on the flying stand. I first though of using milliput but that would have really messed up the balance of the mini and it would fly tilted.

5. I applied some Vallejo White Pumice on the foam. I thought it would create a nice charred texture when painted black, and it did!

6. I glued some plastic sprue shavings and some of the random molten plastic bits that were left from cutting the hole on some spots, mostly around the edges of the hole. It will create small bubbles and molten looking marks when burnt. I also glued some bigger bits in the middle to create interesting looking texture.

7. I glued a few small pieces of styrofoam on the damaged region, some of it on the pumice, some on the plastic. Styrofoam shrinks a lot when heated so these can be about the size of your fingertip or even bigger depending on what kind of effect you are looking for. It's also a bit of a surprise how it behaves when heated as it might just vanish almost completely, or it might melt or just create something resembling the pumice texture...

8. I let the glue dry for a while.

9. KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!

(9. Go outside or somewhere else where you won't burn down your house, cause fire alarms, or choke to death with all the toxic fumes you'll be releasing soon. Be careful not to hurt yourself and so on... Light a candle, hold your model so that the damaged region is facing downwards and bring it close to the candle. Stuff will start to burn and melt, be careful not to completely burn your model or create unwanted damage to it.)

10. Scrub away any ashes and other burning residue with an old toothbrush. Try to be gentle, otherwise your battle damage might get damaged with some fiddly bits falling off.

11. Paint it nice and pretty somehow.

I'm not an expert on the matter by no means. This was all done on bit of a whim without proper testing :D It's just how I thought it might work if I get lucky. The other option would have been a ruined model...

that, sir, is genius. I can just imagine the thought processes...

"hmmn. I need to make my tank look like it got burnt. Hmmn. What to do, what to do...
...
...
...
Eureka! Let's burn the mofo!" :D :D :D

Seriously, though - thank you very much for the very clear instructions. It really is an extremely effective technique, and tbh I've never seen anything like it. Next time I need to burninate an eldar tank (and I play eldar, so this will be in the not too distant future...) I will certainly be using this technique. Much obliged to you :)

in weathered style i like eldars. looks really nice. i ever found it hard to choose the correct colors for rust. turns out much to brown or to yellowish in my tries. but yours good!

Really nice and enjoyable work so far! Many thanks for posting :)

As for the battledamage, although it looks nice, the wing tip has been very cleanly cut imo. Perhaps you can try extending the damage on its upper exterior armour and reveal some damaged detail, like burned wiring and bend frames, from within?

Maybe a giant nid lash or a Dreadknight sword cleaved it off. A shearing force would present how you describe jo b, but a cutting force, especially supported by some futuristic force field, would make a fairly clean cut. The edges would be cauterized. Think Predator :)

That's exactly what I thought the first few times I checked the thread, but then it was mentioned that "I imagined it would be a huge laser/plasma type weapon" and can't get it out of my head since.

Me being silly, no worries :D
