WIP First Rackham mini, Kelen (Updated, Complete!)

Hey guys!

Well, i was so happy with the way my last mini turned out i decided to give this WIP thing another shot. Its actually a pretty difficult mini to paint so I am prolly going to progress a lot slower than the Eldar which was pretty simplistic in sculpt comparitively. Anyway here is what I have so far.

kelen_2.jpg

Overall i am pleased, however,I think the green may need to pop a little more and im not sure how to go about making that happen to be honest. I mean i want it to be a tad dark, but it looks slightly on the drab side right now to me. good? bad? I havent painted any of those tiny details yet, and im sure that will help the overall look. Also, it is veryy difficult to get all that fillagree like SUPER clean. I will most likely keep workin at it. Any tips on that would be appreciated. I think i may need to ramp up the highlights on the browns of the chest one more notch but am not sure of it.

I am using a bunch of new stuff so this is definitely another learning experience. First. I am using my brand new just out of the box set of vallejo game color. So far, so good, but they do seem to dry with a bit of a sheen to them. any way to combat this? I went out and got all the stuff i needed to make a wet palette and am using it on this project.. it is freaking great! I went t be last night, closed up my wet palette and stuck it in the fridge. woke up this morning, added a few drops of water to the colors and i was right back to painting. finally I am using Raphael brushes on this mini and can say so far that I am pleased. Not everything is working out the way I want, but its coming along.

Please let know what you think!

thanks guys

Cheers!

he looks sweet man, wish i could paint like you
where have you bought this mini cause i cant find any metal unpainted rackham figures anymore:S

I paint my thumb.
Nice color. What are you using for shading, it does a good job, but in a couple places in the deepest recesses it\'s a bit too stark and looks somewhat \'thick\'.

So far so good amigo! I believe the VGC paints are made with something to make them more durable on the tabletop, and that\'s where the sheen comes from (COuld be mistaken though). SHould come off at the end if/when you seal it.

Rackham minis are definately difficult to paint, but you are handling the mini very well. The highlights and shadows on the cloth look great and blended well. Great job so far.

thanks for the comments guys. yeah he is not easy to paint at all! I am working on all the little twirls and it is proving a bit frustrating.

@aapjeBOB0 Unfortunately i have had this guy for years and just never painted him cause i wanted to \"get better\" before i started him.. well i figured i should just give him a shot since i felt it would be a learning experience in and of itself to paint this guy and that would make me better! so far its been a tough paint for sure! so to answer your question, i wish i knew... they made the neatest minis in the business if you ask me. there was something they were doing called Rackham Legends that were a line of metal classic minis aimed at hobbyists like us but i dont know what happened with that.

@ greenone thanks! the base coat is camo green and khaki. for the succesive layers of shadow added into that were yellow olive, then yellow olive green and hexed lichen (liche purple) then a small bit of black for the final shadows. the shadows were then given a wash of terracotta then a wash of ultra blue in the deepest parts. i was just playing with the subtle hues to make it look a bit less flat and more alive.

Ill keep yall updated. thanks guys!

Cheers

OK... slow going but here\'s an updated pic of the guy... man doing his face was hard but I managed to get the look i was going for i think: a sinister, \'i know something you dont\' look.
The flesh tone was a lot of fun.. littl washes here and there though im not done with the hands yet. the leather with trim was a pain but a good experience. After this one im looking forward to painting something like an ork or something!

thanks for the input thus far, its always welcome! let me know what you think.

The back of the cloak looks great as does the skin. The face has a very sinister and confident expression. Keep up the good work!

OK.. been busy this week with business stuff, but got a chance to do some painting finally! I got the staff and blade done as well as doing some skin touch ups and leather touch ups.

I am liking how it went. I am not sure wether to do the butt end of the scythe gold or keep with the same metal scheme i have.

anyway thanks for the input and let me know what you think!

I paint my thumb.
Nice work with the NMM.
I think the other part of the scythe would need to be another color, but not necessarily gold, maybe just a darker sort of iron.

thanks guys!

@Green
yeah, i was thinking that a darker something would work as well, I may do this.

@diablo
I also agree with this and this makes sense to me.

I think what ill do is see what others have done and give something a run. heck if i dont like it i can always paint it over ;)

cheers!

The blade looks great. Only thing I would say is to blend it to pure white, or close to it, in a small area on the concave part. It should look real nice.

hey thanks so much for the input!

Its funny you should mention that because thats exactly what i did initially. Then i thought i had not properly followed the natrual reflection since i was thinking that light would only collect there if it were a concave ad not a convex surface. but i liked the way it looked so isntead of painting it over completely, i just added additional layers of highlight over it to mellow it out quite a bit. If you look closely you can see it still where the blade begins to curve upward.

So you are saying that when considering reflection is should be there? it would be easy to replace i think and ill do so if it will help the mini.

on another note: I am also hoping that a layer of matte spray varnish will take out the shininess in the shadowed areas of the cloth left by the new paints i am using.

Thanks again guys!

Ok... busy week but i got some more done!

@Alien I went with the extra highlight on the blade and am satisfied with how it went. Thanks for that!

The head dress or what have you I used the same palette as the blade. the feathers I will do from a brow to white. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to do that will considering that white has poor coverage?

Let me know what you think guys.
