Before I post any pics, I suppose it's a good idea to introduce myself and give a little background. I'm 49 and started painting minis again in February of 2021. This is my third go at painting minis. The first two times don't really count, though. I first started back in '79/'80 when my step-father came back from GenCon with a ton of unpainted minis. He allowed my brother and I to paint a couple of his minis, but eventually he bought my brother and I a Grenadier Wizards boxed set (#2001). I can't remember too much about the Wizards minis other than knowing I was a horrible painter at the age of 9, and essentially gave up. My next go was somewhere around '98/'99. I bought a pack of Warhammer Lizard Men, and a big Dragon. I did better than when I was 9, but still I knew I was a horrible painter and gave up again. Fast forward now to 2021, with all of the stay at home orders, I needed something to do to fill my time (you can only binge-watch TV series so many times). This time I decided to do a bunch of research before starting, and made a promise not to give up. For some reason, I have an affinity for Orcs. So I initially searched for Warhammer Orcs, only to find out that Warhammer has changed since the last time I looked into it. Then I remembered my step-father had a huge Orc army back in 79/80 and I remembered the name of Ral Partha. So then my research led me to find Grenadier Orc 103a Axeman. This was my favorite figure from my step-father's army so I searched around and found a couple on Ebay. I've come to realize that I have zero interest in anything Warhammer is creating, so my targets will be Grenadier and Ral Partha minis from the late '70s/early 80's, and the Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings miniatures games. I do realize that the quality of those old minis is pretty poor, but it's kinda like reliving a childhood dream to pain them well. To date I have completed 9 minis, with over 100 (most from the Stark vs. Lannister's set) waiting to be painted. Over the next few days I will post what I've done so far. I don't know any other painters so I would definitely be interested in feedback on my minis.

Thanks in advance!

Here is the first one. I apologize for the low quality picture, apple Iphones and low light.... I don't think you can tell, but I did not highlight after applying a black wash. I thought it looked too good from far away. Obviously close up it looks quite dirty and dingy, but I couldn't bring myself to attempt highlighting. Also, I'm horrible at faces.

Good job! And welcome back to painting mini's! I think if you look a little You'll find a bunch of us have drifted in and out of the hobby. I know I took almost a decade off after I joined the army. My best suggestion would be to check the forums here for some good tips on painting techniques, and how to get the best out of pics with your phone.

Welcome to the forum and back to the hobby. As MrNoNameSoldier said their are a lot of good article listed up top to help you improve. Just let everyone know what you are hoping to accomplish and you will get a lot of advice and encouragement.

Nice to see the old school minis getting some nice loving

Mini #5 Ral Partha 01-022 Elf Lord. This is the only mini so far that I gave up really trying to finish. At some point I realized there was no way for this Elf Lord to wield that two-handed hammer and have a shield at the same time. I was mostly interested in seeing how certain colors dried; testing out colors for my Stark theme. Vallejo Bronze is a very crappy color; back of shield; never seen a bronze in real life look like this color.

Minis #6~#8, Ral Partha 01-073 Clerics. Since this was packaged as a trio I thought it would be fun to paint them with the same scheme. I used Reaper 9134 Clotted Red for the main color. I absolutely love this color! This was also my first attempt at highlighting after applying a wash. I was a bit heavy handed with the wash in some areas, but overall I was quite happy. The one in the middle I dry brushed the highlights, the ones on the left and right I painted the highlights (except for hair;dry brushed).

Minis #9 and #10. Taken from Grenadier Action Art 8002 - Monsters. The first one, 8002f - Assasin I completely painted all of the highlights after applying the wash. Quite quite happy with the results, except for the cloak. I used Reaper 9010 Pine Green and Citadel Agrax Earthshade for the wash. It doesn't really show up, too good. Maybe I should have used Nuln Oil instead. For the shield I also followed a Vallejo tutorial for wood, quite happy with that, too.
