WIP Necrons

I already posted it a bit around, but after looking at the result shown in here, i though it could be a good idea to ask for tips here..

So, to give a little background, i started being interested in warhammer 40k aroun the beginning of this month, and decided to go with the Necron (cool story imho, and kinda like the overall look....). Before that, i had very minimal experience with painting (used to paint little cars a long time ago, but didnt really have the patience back then)

Now, for my choice of color, i think its worth explaining.

- i went with black, mostly. The reason isnt because i\'m lazy, but because i figured that as a race that is pretty much brain dead, fluffy color didnt make much sense. So yes, my warrior are mostly black, and i dont hate it at all.
- The second color is metallic, for the face and the spine, because even if they get repaired every fight, there has to be something nearly indestructible, kinda like the brain of the warrior, so i figured that the face and the spine were pretty much the best bet for that. The joints, fingers and toes are also metallic, for the same reason, and to break the line a bit.

- the last color is of course green. Since their weapon use that green rod as symbol of energy flowing thru it, i figured that green material could also be the \"energy\" powering the body of the warrior. Which is why in the end, it will bleed green.

Here is a first example of what i\'m trying to achieve. Note that i did ad some green line (not really a steady hand yet) on the armor, just to break the monotony of the armor (and give me a bit more challenge)

also, for the face, i painted it mithril metallic first, then i used a very dillued boltgun to make the darker part of the face (basically, the front and the side, leaving only the edge mithril). I think i could of achieved the same result with highlighting (sp?), but i\'m not sure.

On this one, i painted the armor a little bit (mixt of brown, metallic and black). I wanted to test how it\'d look, and i didn\'t really like it.

these were part of the first batch of 4 that i painted, my first ever. they were glued before painting, while the next 4 were painted then glued.

The next 4 were done a little differently.

First, i tried to add a bit more green to the armor, to really give the idea that there\'s energy flowing through their armor too.

I\'m not sure i used the right strategy to paint it, but the overall look is kinda good, for table top standard, and especially since most of it wont be visible once the weapon is glued on the guy. Basically what i did was dip my paintbrush (10-0) in water, then in green, then i made a \"pool\" of paint in each hole. After that, i did kind of similar to drybrush over the armor, to remove the green that went around the hole. If you have a better strategy, i\'m all ears.

For the legging, i did a line there too, but i\'m not 100% sure i wanna keep it... it does add color, but not really... i dunno... anyway. You can also see on that picture that i painted the spine, with green line between each \"bone\". i used the same strategy as for the armor to make the line.

The First 5. I tried many different way to paint them. They are all unique, but also fit together (since they are mostly all black).

they look promising. :)

try using very thin well place washes on the metals.
it will alter how the light reflects off them as well as adding shading.
it\'s a technique used by jackob nielson and various spanish painters to name but a few.

i kinda went the other way... i actually painted the \"middle\" of the metal (on spine and face) with darker color... not sure i could add more (Except to the sharp end of the weapon, but then i dont know what to do... so far my test sucked big time)

Wash are usually used to give shadow to object, right?

I though about doing some highlighting in dark gray, but there is just so little edge i could do it on on a warrior imho...

I\'m also trying to get my technique good enough to start on my Lord, which is almost ready to be painted (using roughly the same color scheme)

Looking good :) I came across http://www.brushthralls.com/Cryx_10Day/part2.php yesterday - doing exactly what you\'re doing with the glowing vents. It might be of some use.
