Heres a WI of the orc im painting for the Wryd Iron Painter. Iv finished the flesh, its the first Orc flesh iv EVER painted and IMO the best flesh iv ever painted! lol I wanted the cartoony, over emphasised contrst look, so iv done it with very dark low lights and very bright highlights.
The flash on my cam has brought out the highlights on the top of the shoulders a little to much though so they seem to look to bright.
Please tell me if im doing this right!?

I think the physical locations of your highlights are not big enough......there are areas that should be highlighted that aren\'t.
A good idea would be to take a photo of the mini with a light shining directly above it. Or, in future, try using black primer, then spraying white primer from above only......voila, highlights defined

(I\'m thinking about his the upper right shoulder and bicep.these are still basecoated where the light would hit)

I think you\'re spt on about the highlights Orb

Matty try extending them over the full top of the muscles a bit. Do it bit by bit as you go so you can stop at any stage and come back. (Have a look at my Minotaur in my gallery for what I mean, same for beastmen there). You can afford to be a bit mor adventurous.

I love what you said about the deep contrast on the shadows as I love that style of painting. Think about a dark dreen ink wash, maybe with a touch of dark angels green between layers?

Keep it up though.

I do need to extend the highlighting a bit more over the muscles, iv tried the wash before but it jus made it a bit shiny in recesses! Iv not got time to reaint the flesh entirely on this one due to it being the comp entry, but iv got 5 more of these for the squad to paint so il try on each of them, my last one should therefore be amazing!

The next stage for my Orc:
ORCWIP3.jpg

Iv painted the sword NMM then added rust, then NMM again then blood, this is the first time iv ever used these techniques with the exception of NMM which i have used once before! The leather bands on his torso are also done by giving layers of red, brown and cream to get the worn look.
I have painted the staff/banner stick and made it lighter where his hand would have rubbed it over the years. (thanks to my dad for pointing this out!)
Its not amazing, but im pleased so far with it as it has phused my abilities and forced me to learn (or start learning lol) new techniques.
I dont no why iv painted words on the bottom, just got bored i suppose!

Orb have you ever actually used this method on your work? I\'ve always thought of trying it but never really thought it would work.
