WIP Reaper Bathalian--my first go at NMM gold

And it sucks....any advice would be greatly appreciated. For those familiar with the Reaper Master Series Paints, I used the Chestnut Gold/Palomino Gold/Buckskin Pale triad as well as a 1:1 Buckskin:Linen White. I am thoroughly disappointed with the effort. Any suggestions? Am I highlighting the wrong spots? It looks too yellow to me...would a brown wash help to tone it down or make it look \"richer\"?

Thanks in advance,
Jabber

I wouldn\'t say it sucks, having tryed it myself just one time so far, but what I can see it could use some more contrast, darker colour. maybe a bit more reddish-brown, a wash or a glaze, I\'m not shore on what\'s the best...

looking good anyway! keep us posted.

Nice mini! Lovely smooth transitions and highlights on the clothes. And as ZapotekE said, it far from sucks.

With your NMM problem I agree with ZapotekE again - you need more contrast and you also need more highlights. I think that some glazing to darken the shadows more and adding fairly stark highlights up to pure white would bring the metallic aspect to it....perhaps other people (who have actually painted nmm ;) ) could offer some advice...

Cheers,

Its a good start

I too struggle with NMM...not just gold, just NMM in general! I always find it ends up looking more stylised rather than authentic. But I just accept that is my style so try not to worry about it :D

I\'m at work at the moment and can\'t quite remember what colours I use for gold, but I\'ll edit this post at home later and let you have the info. I\'m pretty sure I start with quite a dark colour like snakebite leather (quite a yellowy brown) and then use Yellow ochre and bleached bone to bring up the highlights. I\'ll see if I can post a pic of my NMM too, which might help.

I think your NMM lacks a start and finish, by that I mean an obvious dark area leading up to an obvious light area. It seems to be all one colour, but that might be the photo. Other than that, I would say that the robe and face are both done very nicely indeed and really make the model stand out. Well done :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I really appreciate it. It did some more scouring (and begging :D ) around the \'net and then went back and tried to darken as well as lighten things up. I definitely think it is better, although I\'m not fully satisfied with the result.

Very nice improvement on the gold! I think a touch of pure white on the edges of the top sections will really make it stand out.

By the way, the clothing and skin are excellent! :)
