wip source lighting

Here\'s a wip on my first source lighting. I know, the flames are horrible, I\'m working on them, and the face is too red, but I think it\'s a pretty good start. It\'s really hard to get the flames glowing like I want to though. Any tips?

Ok my 2 Kroner\'s worth.
A couple of points I\'ve spotted:-
The fingers on the foremost hand are all evenly lit, I think that the first finger would get the most illumination and the rest would be shadowed.
The Trailing Knee, I think, would get less light therefore the area of illumination would be less.
Lastly the trailing shoulderpad would only have the very edges picking up the flames.

Sorry if I sound as if I\'m nitpicking, but this is a very complex piece of work to do and you deserve the credit for:-
A) attempting it
and
B) putting up a work in progress asking for suggestions.

I\'m looking forward to the finished article. :D

Did you use black primer? White primer on flames is essential to make them look brighter.
I also think you have to many reds in there, flames only get darker on the very ends.

Thanks for the comments!
@dragonsreach Yeah I see what you mean, I actually had less lighting around the trailing parts, but then I thought it looked like the effect couldn\'t really be seen at all, so I addded some more...it\'s so easy to overdo it. I have now shaded the fingers and the trailing parts, and have added some lighting to the gun instead. The really hard part is the face though...I guess it\'s because the flesh tones are so close in colour to the flame reflections. I will definately write an article, the actual technique wasn\'t as hard as I thought, the hard part is to know where to use it. Er...shouldn\'t really be saying that before I\'m done I guess :rolleyes:lol

it\'s good so far!

when i had to do my light sourced mini, i found useful to use a real light source like a lighter or a light-pen to see what areas had to be highlighted

my second tip is to use a black background as it really helps in the final pic

my third suggestion is to use more yellow, because it is a very bright colour and stand really out

my fourth is to put some reflections on the hairs and the left tibia (but as it is a wip, maybe you just did not work on them so far)

anyway, it\'s a great job!

keep it up!

Why must people attempt things whle I\'m trying to get my thoughts down in an article?!?!... Oh, well... :p

Couple of things wrong:
Her far shoulder pad would not get any light, and if it did, it would be a lot less noticable than what the current color is.
Green cannot reflect orange!! There is no orange pigment in green, there is yellow, so thus the highlights would look yellower, like this comparison:

sw1.jpg

On the left is a swatch of color that\'s around the same as your gun, on the left is how it would look if orange light was on it. Notice how it\'s lighter, which gives the effect of illumination, but not orange.

Some things right:
You didn\'t highlight the black parts. Black absorbs light and color, so it cannot reflect orange back.
You also made a sort of \'Field\" where the light will go, but it needs to be more \"glowing\" by putting brighter colors near the source, and gradullay making them darker (ie, the armor closer to the light gets highlighted more than the one furthest).

Hope this helps!! :bouncy:

...and if some rules lawyer tries to tell ya that melta guns blast melta juice not flame- tell him that the heat is igniting the atmosphere around the discharge beacuse its soo darn hotlol:D:flame:lol

The green could reflect the white of the flame though, and that could have a reddish hue, so some of the green could be red as long as there is a white area inbetween. Maby not, I\'m pretty tired to be thinking about painting and fire.

Don\'t forget \"Sacapuntas!!\"

It\'s closely related to several swear words on spanish, but really just means \"pencil sharpener\". When said angrily, it sounds quite harsh.

It looks good but..

Two comments, please don\'t hate me..

First off, with all do respect Chrispy, I have to disagree. With a really intense light source orange highlights will appear on a green surface, since in this case we are not talking about reflected light and wavelength absorbsion but actual illumination from a colored light source. Take a room and illuminate it with a red party bulb, with this light source being so intense it overpowers the natural highlights.

Second, and I know this is picky, but isn\'t that a melta gun, not a flamer? Doesn\'t a melta gun fire a charged partical beam rather than a billowing cloud of flames? Outside of this minor detail I do like your mini and think it is well done.

Wot?? My thread got all hijacked without any warning?? Ah, well, I see it as a step forward in my CMoN carreer ;):D
*edit* and it just went back on topic :D:D
Anyhow, yes, it\'s a melta gun, thing is I didn\'t know that, I never played 40k. I just thought this would be a great mini to try light sourcing on. Calavera was kind enough to tell me though. But who says melta bolts can\'t be orange ;)?? (everyone I guess)
