WIPs for competition entries

Just wondering what everybody's thoughts were on creating WIPs for projects that are going to be entered for competitions (e.g. Golden Demon and similar). Do you think it puts that miniature at a disadvantage despite the benefits of having people comment and critique on that piece - or in fact does the comments and critique's mean that piece is no longer an original?

There is that, but you also will have to check the comp rules. There was one comp (was it WAMP?) that said wip shots were ok, but you could not post shots of the completed mini or it would be disqualified. So you would have to be very careful of posting shots depending on how far along you are in the project, and know exactly by the rules what constitutes a finished mini. If the mini is not based, is it completed? That sort of thing.

Yep why not I'm sure a lot of artists show their mates the work their doing and it's still original and as far as the competition well if it bothers you don't put on the WIP that it's for a comp. sorted next, world peace? Energy crisis? :laugh:

Unless it's explicitly against competition rules, I don't see the harm. Sure, some people here might see it, but if it's an actual in person competition the majority of the other entrants will not be regulars here. So I wouldn't worry about your secret plans getting out. And I've always gotten lots of good feedback from the folks here. I'd rather post WIPs and get feedback over worrying about losing some imaginary competitive advantage.

Always check the competition rules. But for comps such as Demon and whatnot, I've seen a lot of people post WIP's until they start getting to the final stages of the mini. Then they hold off posting photos until either last minute before the comp, so folks can see the final version, or immediately afterward. It all depends on the artist's preference. If you're uncomfortable posting pics, because you want to keep it under wraps, then don't worry about posting. With my Demon entries I'll most likely continue posting pics until I make that last turn into the homestretch.

It's never "felt right" to me to show wips on comp entries because I know that there are judges out there who visit this site. (*)
Showing WIP comp entries to people Face to Face for suggestions, while I have in the past done it once or twice, I'm still not comfortable with as it makes me feel that the figure is no longer "All My Own Work".
Talking to judges after a comp (been both sides there) not just about the reasons why figure X didn't win but to gain more insight as to how to improve is something I prefer.

I can not believe they not only copied your work but had the cheek to enter it in the
SAME comp!!!!! What the he'll did they think you would say when you saw it??? I would of threw a right wobbly

Tbh, I never paint for comps. I paint a mini and if it's anywhere near decent, I'll enter it
