Working on through the cape, learning a lot about achieving those gradual highlights - this thing is not forgiving! In the future I think I’ll finish the whole cape with shadows and highlights before applying the mid-tone wash to smooth it all out. Being pedantic, I’ve been applying glazes to smooth out each highlight before i move to the next; not the most efficient method. Very much look forward to applying a matte tint to the final product and getting the shine out of those shadows.

Nice work. The red cape looks good as it is. The slight shine makes it look a little like velvet. I like the fur pelt too.

Hi all, a belated Happy New Year to you. I took 10 or so days off painting after Christmas to refresh my motivation. On the 24th Dec, i had a go at applying Lahmian Medium on the cape again to dull the gloss (this time making sure the paint fully cured) - but for some reason the result was once again streaky (see earlier post for example). I died a little. But eventually got back in there and fixed it best i could - im calling the following ‘finished’ for the cape at this stage

Next up is the face! This is something id really like to do well. I’ve taken cues from Powells Painting Projects. Below you can see my progress on basecoat + shading;

As always, any feedback is appreciated

Good work. The face are you goin* to go back in and smooth things ou. I call it fine tuning,I do it between each shade and each highlight.

I like the smooth red highlights on the Cape. A thin spray of dull coat will remove the shine in the shadows.

The shading on the face needs to be more of a wash instead of a layer of paint.
It will be difficult to get a smooth blend from such a harsh contrast in colours.
Think I spy a mold line on the side profile of head also.

That’s ecactly how ide approach it and other smaller pieces of models. Same fine tuning and using what ten said as your approach of smoothie things out.;)

Appreciate the valuable feedback guys! Confirming im still smoothing this out, but Ill stay at this stage and get her smoothed out as best i can, clean up that mould line, and seek further feedback before procedding. I’ve got plenty of heads to fall back on if this one doesnt work out.

Tip top work there, I like the Cape and face is looking good, 10 balls idea of a wash is good or do some investigating in to glazes.

how far do you want to go? a dark wash will sink into the crevices of his face and then you can mix a darker tone of the skin tone and place it on the shadows avoiding the crevices work your way back up to the highlights. he's looking good with the eyes.

Plugged away at the face further today, adding some darker shades and generally just picking at it till i felt ‘okay’ with it (i’ll know for sure whether i’m truly okay with it when i look at it later). The following are before and after todays painting session:

I felt the start point (blonde) was too pink in the face and overall didnt nail the look i wanted. The end point better meets my intention with regard to face tone and shade colour.

The hair has only just been started and hasn’t received much focus - its up next.

that's looking better! have a look at baileys thread early on there is a 30k head he paints and it's awesome. you can get a good idea of the types on colours to use too. keep up the good work.

Thanks Canny, great tip! I’ve bookmarked his thread and am reading through it - his work is awesome, can learn a lot from him.

I often end up with my paint sessions being 50% reading and looking it's easy to spend ages learning. but once you start you end up in the zone.
