wood elf dragon commission

Hello,

A customer has requested that I paint a wood elf dragon for him. But I\'m not really sure about the price I\'m going to ask for it because I have never seen that thing in real life...

How big is this dragon? About how much work do have on it (assembling, painting)?

Don\'t worry, I have already warned him that it isn\'t going to be cheap :innocent:

Bigger than the current HE and DE ones IIRC, it is all metal too (apart from the wings), so there will be lots of pinning to do, I seem to remember that the tail is in about three parts and is a pain to put together

As for how much to charge, that really depends on the paint job, you could get away with drybrushing all those scales on it\'s back, but for a really kick ass paint job you could do them all individually

gee lets see the model would cost the guy what?, sixty bucks? you pay for the brushes(ware+tare) paint, flocking, putty (supplies) so price should include re-embursment and for servises rendered.

so=

supplies= $6-$10

servises= per peice $5.00-$10.00

so lets calculate

three peices for neck torso tail=$15-$30

head (needs special attention) = $10-$20

two legs = $10-$20

two wings= $10-$20

rider = four parts = $20-$40

throne= $5-$10

specialized banner= $5-$15

base= $10-$20

and (gw dragons are a bitch to assemble and keep assembled so youll probly need to drill) assembly = $5-$15

so we get $101 - $200

id happily go for half way at $150

but most likely myself do it for.........$80 ish
just cuz im a push over....

I have this guy at home. The picture you posted is very close to the actual size. I don\'t know how else to express the size, it takes up about as much area as a good sized grapefruit.???

The tail is in three parts, and I did struggle to get it to stay together. I had to pin a few of the parts.

Post a pic when you get it all painted. I have this guy primed and ready to go, but need some more inspiration!

the customer requests the dragon to be painted in a rather high quality, so I think 150 will be a good amount to start the negotiations

Depends, if it\'s just a display piece you could get away with just doing the old \'green stuff and superglue\' trick, but if it\'s a gaming piece, you need to pin it so it doesn\'t keep falling apart due to the rigours of battle

better get myself to my hobby store and buy the necessary equipment: pinning vice and metal wire

yeah pinning is ALWAYS neccasary when working on a GW dragon.....

Perhaps he was worried that the new one would be based on the plastic dragon, like the HE and DE ones

Anyway I\'m rather fond of this one myself, I think GW would struggle to better it

On another note, it does seem odd to have dragons in the WE list, not because they don\'t have access to them, because they do. But the WE\'s style of play has been going down the lines of stealthy guerrilla warfare lately. I don\'t think you\'re going to sneak up on anyone with a 25ft dragon in tow lol

Actually its a really nice miniature, one of my favourites.

I don\'t think the GW colour scheme for this model is the best though.

well youre right the DRAGON is super sweet but the rider sucks a$$. hey wait how many times have dragons snuck up on adventurers and killed em all........

I use paper clips for the wire for pining, just the right thickness and strength.

Now you\'ve got me wanting to do this for my wood elf army... grrrr

I painted and extensively converted this model into a Chinese Black Dragon. The friend I did it for was happy with a price of £250 (that\'s pounds sterling, not dollars). But that involved a very particular conversion.

Do you have a picture posted of that? I always thought that particular dragon had a definate \'oriental\' feel to it.

yes! I think thats exactly why its great,
I too painted mine into a Chinese dragon, not black though. I think its the way the tail curls and its slimness that set its apart from the other dragon models.

£250 for a £25 model is not bad going at all lol

The dragon looks like a lot of work, esp. with all those scales. With a nice base (grass, rock whatever) and a display paintjob, I\'d say 200 USD minimum for paintjob, plus supplied mini.

Hi,

I painted this model too as part of my Games Day entry last year. Every scale was painted as a leaf. It took months. As for how much to charge, I reckon that $150 to $200 is a fair price. Below is a link to the one that I painted.
