Wood Elf WIP

I have always painted character figs - but since moving towns to one where everyone plays Warhammer - I have started looking at some of the armies and have now taken on Wood Elves and Bretonnians.

Never having painted quickly to begin with - this is a great chance for learning to paint units and work colour schemes out over more than one model. I think this is going to be fun. :)

So here are my first 4 WE at about 85% completion. The one with the tree on his base is the furthest from being finished while the one with the blue facepaint is almost done.

I would love to get some feedback on colour choice, quality for units, and any problems you think I might run into doing them this way (besides them taking ages to finish - he he)

Thanks!

They look really cool :D I like the scenic style of the bases. It really does help establish the woodland theme.

The only thing I would like to warn you about is this: Ranking up the archers with cloaks can be a pain if you\'re not careful. Find an arrangement that works and mark the underside of their bases with a pen or something, so you know how to line them up properly for gaming.

If you want to look at my army, then my blog has a lot of pics in it. There\'s a Wood Elf folder in the gallery if you don\'t want to track back through all the posts.

If you have any questions about army lists or anything, feel free to ask. I\'m playing in a campaign that has grown from 500-1300 points, and we\'re going up 200 every 2 weeks. I\'m learning a lot about the army this way :)

a lot of effort has been put into the bases, and it was worth it

about the colors: green and brown always work :)

good job

I found this out the hard way when I had to reposition...LOL - I can get these 4 to stand nicely - and am being more careful with the next lot. And your alter noble - I am painting him as my first character fig for the army...I like your conversion and the orange feature colour!

Bases: Only 1 is finished but I wanted to have more than grass - hopefully it comes through well.

Green/Brown - I struggled to come up with a scheme that was woodsy without being either green/brown, snow or autumn - of which all had already been done - so I kept the green and brown but am adding purple and blue to liven it up. Hopefully it works well. I did play with the idea of doing them in a less traditional scheme but if they are supposed to hide - it would be kinda hard....

I love the way green, purple and teal work together. I think they make a fabulous core for an army\'s color composition. Stuff like spites and runes look great in teal hilighted up with Space Wolf Grey.

I have a question about warpaint - would you pick a general shape/pattern and stick with that throughout an entire unit or vary it on every model?

fluff-wise I\'d say every warrior is responsible for his own warpaint, so there might be some variation, although I\'d stick to the same color for the entire unit.

These are lookin great, and very nice basework.

I agree with Corvus on the war paint matching or similar colors for em all but vary the pattern amongst your Elves. Also Heroes could get a different color to give em some distinction in their unit. As well as having different units getting different colors if ya wanted.

UPDATE

UPDATE: After having seen some of Mousekiller\'s awesome armies and discussing with other tourny players - I have decided to use this unit for a painting comp at a LGS and do my army figs on slightly bigger bases (25mm instead of 20mm) with more conversion work and basing to make them stand out on the table.

So to that end I am doing my first display base for multiple figures...only a few figures are done and the rest are still very much WIPs.

Pic of the whole base. Red rocks will become small waterfall feeding into stream with broken tree and a few elves with water bases. Levels will be grassy hills with forest behind them. Bases will be indented.

Shaping up?

They do look good, but in Fantasy you really can\'t get away with changing the base sizes. The rules are very specific about how big bases have to be because base sizes influence movement rates, templates, how many models are in base-to-base combat, etc.

Bigger bases might look better but they\'re not game-legal models anymore. Certainly there would be issues at tournaments.

Ahhhh - I asked some of my friend who play and they said that as long as the size went up and not down that it was allowed as it is in 40K - not so?

Going up in size shouldn\'t be a problem. Going down would. There really aren\'t enough template weapons ior pros to offset the cons of larger bases, as far as I can tell anyway.

I don\'t understand why you\'d go up in base size if you\'re making a large display base for the group anyway though? Especially if you game with them.

Off to a great start. Hope you post the finished result.

I really like these firstly as I quite like wood elves. The second thing I like is that the colours are vibrant and clean. The painting its self is fairly basic with just minimal highlighting but it is so neatly done it works really well.
Im well impressed.
All Id suggest is to make the purple highlights thinner and sharper. Shaping up very nicely.

You cannot change the base sizes in Fantasy, just in 40k. The rules are very specific about what models go on what bases.
