My friend is moving away..and has always wanted Urban scheme imperial guard...so i bought enough to make 1 hvy wep crew and 6 troops...Im going to mount them on a senic wood base..apx 8X12 inches...Can i prime the wood black and just paint it to match the surroundings?

You can pretty much do whatever takes your fancy. This is a hobby whereby people tend to vent there creative bent on small tin or plastic people.

Post some pics so we can get a better idea.

Yes you can, Just make sure you sand it nice and smooth so that you have a nice surface to paint on. Up to 220 grit should be fine. Id use a spray primer like krylon to paint the wood.

I under coat white, then I use a mixe of orange brown and earth.
Then I add a black wash and finally brush with very clear brown, near white.
Result :

i would use even finer grit, i use a 200 for the first step, 500 for the next step and 1000 for a almost glossy, shiny finish ;)

Well you could do that..but once you hit it with primer.. all that ultra high sanding is gonna be lost. Not if he were to polish out a finish clear coat.. yes then up to 3000 it could look like polished glass. Top it off with a little car polish and that would be smooooooooth!
