Wooden Display Bases

Hey that\'s an Idea.
I have plenty of clear resin and a ton of Sawdust.
Just think of the mess I could make. lol
I\'ve managed to make about a dozen decent bases in the space of a year- eighteen months.
My primary problem is that while I can put an edge back onto a Flat blade or a chisel that you could almost shave with, I can\'t do the same with a wood turners gouge.
So turning wood becomes somewhat labour intensive in the finishing process.
Having said that I do have some rather nice pieces of Laburnum which do look great as bases. (Just a pity it\'s so toxic to work with.)

Mike how are you trying to put an edge on your gouges? I have a Wolverine jig made by One way...makes it just about idiot proof.. gets you a razor sharpe edge every time. http://www.oneway.ca/sharpening/grind_jig.htm

However thanks for that link. It\'s possible that might be exactly what I\'m looking for.
I\'m also in the \"market\" for a Chuck, probably going to opt for a Supernova. So that\'s another £140-£150 to save up for. (Plus extra jaws)

I have a one way Talon chuck, but I find most of the bases I turn I use a standard face plate or a screw chuck. I find I was wasteing too much wood with a 4 jaw chuck to turn bases.
A standard face plate just leave you a few mounting holes in the bottom and they are covered easy with little felt pads.
That jig will solve your problems when it comes to sharpening. I was getting razor sharpe tools right out of the box.

My Lathe didn\'t come with a screw chuck (another Purchase to make) and my face plate is a little too large to use for the base sizes I want.
Might be down to the \"Make an adaptor out of Plywood\" method for the time being.
Also looks like I might be having to do a hunt for one of those Jigs this year as well.

By the way with the weak dollar don\'t be afraid to look at American sources.

I made a screw chuck by mounting a block about 1\" thick to a old face plate and then turned it to a cone shaped bevel. The with a tale stock drilled a hole in the center and then drove a large diameter screw in though the back side.. made a nice cheap screw chuck.
