Looking for advice on how to make wood panels, wood planks, etc... With grain... for terrain. Most important would be planks for holding up embankments, or patching shoddy walls. advice is what I make my plea for!
my advice would be to use......real wood !!!
Get some soft easy to cut up wood, and ...voila !! Blasa works nicely, even though the grain isn\'t very visible on it, those small basket in which you buy strawberries and the like work nicely.
As for painting, well it depends on what type of wood you want. But wood is one of those things you can go wild on with many colors and still have it look pretty good
You could use thick paint or wood fiiler or something else, applied to a bit of plastic or some such thing and score in the grain to give to some texture.
I agree, over here in the UK (not sure bout USA), there are service stations at the side of motorways, next to their ridiculously overpriced coffee they have long thin coffee stirring sticks, free, I usually dont bother with the coffee but take around 20sticks, so by now have a fair collection
i\'ll second/third/fourth the coffee sticks. With either coffee sticks, popsicle sticks or balsa wood, you can put a very light stain on them to bring out the grain for further painting, or for a more natural look.
One trick you can use is to get one of those tooth brush sized wire brushes and scrub the stick IN THE DIRECTION OF THE GRAIN. This will bring out the grain out a bit.
On a trickier note, if you\'re REAL careful, you can hold the stick near a flame till it starts to smoke and turn brown (takes practice to do this without catching it on fire) then scrub with the wire brush. This will make the grain much deeper.
Roll out putty thinly; roughly shape when it\'s nearly hard, plus do the basic woodgrain; refine shape with files/knife/sandpaper and sharpen detail on grain.
