Word Bearers Dark Apostle

Okie dokie - the first real WIP update on this guy. I still have a long, long way to go on this one. I don\'t consider the conversion even 50% completed.

With the exception of the left leg it\'s all sticky tack - so I can move and change just about everything. I tacked him together for feedback.

Conversion so far:

Cut, wired and GSed the left leg to stand on the body of a fallen marine. I even used one of my old 2nd ed. marines for a bit of extra effect. I plan on taking the icon on his leg and pressing it in a bit further or ditching the top 2 tines.

Carved off the front of the helmet to add the skull.

Added a bit of flare to his neck - inspired by the mk8 armour and the champion bits. Some filing and filling to do there obviously.

Crozious - Why... it looks so... Imperial. Yup. Very much intentional. I went through a PILE of Chaos ideas for it but kept coming back to \"ritually desecrated their once sacred weapons\" from the codex. So in place of making a Chaos icon I did some desecrating in the form of carving the X in it. I will also add chains, fetishes, or something similar when the idea hits me. But this seems more in keeping with a 10,000 year old chaplain esentially spitting on the icon of his former faith.

Still to come:

I will, of course, add a lot of GS cloth for text.

I\'m thinking of using either the Space Marine champion shoulders or the Chaos ones with the raised bar and the star.

I have a book and flame from a Canonness sitting around that I\'d like to find room for on this guy. Not sure where yet - suggestions?

Thanks in advance for more feedback.

Okay, no more playing with my plastic army men today; I\'m going outside now, thankyouverymuch.

Added the book to his right shoulder - flames on the backpack - and a scroll hanging from the crozious.

I will go back and GS some straps to hold the book in place. I also removed the top 2 tines from his left leg; they looked a bit silly to me.

Still a long, long way to go.

I\'m starting to feel pretty closed to finished with this conversion. Unfortunately it\'s going to be a pain to paint as I glued the torso to the legs, and the whole thing to the base, in order to make it easier to manage the GS additions.

You should invest in a pin vice from GW if you aint already got one. I use it to hold pieces in place so i can see what will be where on the finished model.

A pin vice I have. It has been my experience, however, that the best result with GS that drapes (cloaks, tabards, etc.) is always when the model is in its final position.

Otherwise what I find happens is that I\'ll GS a cloak, set the torso aside, and discover that it now no longer lays where I want it to.

I have the model primed and ready to go, but....

I can\'t decide whether to do him in dark red armour, as a Word Bearer, or in black armour, like a chaplain.

I\'m leaning to black and bone based on the description in the codex but, again, as a non player I\'m torn.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Hows about black highlighted with red, the best of both worlds!

I think the conversion has turned out fantastic! The collar armour is a cool touch, as is the flaming brazier (I think thats what theyr\'e called- otherwise I may have just said he is burning a girlie bra!) on the banner. I especially like the scroll on the accursed crozius, really helps with the character of the piece.
I was a bit unsure about the knee icon at the start but it works well. The GS looks ok to me too.

I took Ap0k\'s recommendation on the Relic forum (dark red with black marble trim and gold accents) and ran with it. Still a long, long way to go - so far to go, in fact, that I\'m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Would love some feedback.

Unfortunately I don\'t have anything other than a white cloth to use as a backdrop. The result is a really washed out look when I adjust the levels enough to make anything visible. I promise to find a fix.

If you look carefully you can see a watermarked Chaos symbol and skull behind the detail work.

This will be cool to watch as I\'m starting a wordbearer force soon with one of these nasty dudes.

btw. where does it mention that they would have black armour? or is it a case of it doesn\'t mention it but chaplains wear black? just so i know :) You could always give him demonic armour in which case you could have a black background with swirling red faces painted over it....just an idea. Anyways, keep it up ;)

Looks good, My favourite conversion of yours that Ive seen so far.
Your work on the banner seems a little heavy handed, I\'d say use thinner paint and alot of patience to build it up slowly.
Also, I wouldn\'t go with the white field on the banner.
Good stuff mister Justine
EDIT: just looked back and seen how small that damn banner is, and my comment seems a little harsh in after thought, especially looking at the iluminated capitals in the text.:)

Great conversion, and glad its getting a paintjob to do it justice! The red armour works, the skull is well painted and the banner is fantastic too!

Hows he coming on?

@hubbabubba: no worries, mate; I think it\'s a bit thick too -- but now I\'m trying to decide whether or not to redo it anyway against a black background. Thanks for the edit all the same - those letters were a pain!

@OrkyDave: I have a small pile of commissioned pieces that I haven\'t been putting enough time in to -- so I\'ve been focusing on those. Especially since once these are back to their home I get to paint three conversions done up by one of my favorite model choppers. Fun, fun.

Hopefully I\'ll have an update tomorrow though. I paint with a buddy every Monday and it\'s no commission work allowed now. Should be able to finish my BT terminator and make progress on this guy.

@darkartminiatures: nothing in the fluff; I just figured a chaplain is supposed to be black so....

Okie dokie - update time. Not a lot of overall progress at this point -- mostly detail. I do consider the bone on his helmet finished but that\'s about it. I am also trying to pain teeny, tiny skulls all over his armour -- but it might wind up limited to his legs. Opinions?

Personally, I am not too keen on the skulls. They look too patterned, and remind me of an Emo kids socks or sweat wrist band thingy. It is a very cool concept however, but I feel it is too uniformed to suit a Chaos piece (which in its very nature should be chaotic, not uniformed) - Maybe if they were painted more like a pile of skulls? now that WOULD be cool (also more difficult!)

Everything else is looking spot on though, and very word bearerey. Have also looked at some of the GW and forgeworld sculpted Word Bearer bits and yellow flames features on them a fair bit too if this helps?
