Work issue

First of all, I\'m lucky that I\'m in a stable job in a stable industry (I muck out horses. Hoho! I don\'t really. For those in the know I work for Welsh Water Waste. In an office, not on the ground) and I don\'t mean to come across as a whinger when a lot of people are struggling for work...but by Jove am I angry!

There was role advertised a while ago for two stages above me, and due to some comments by the big boss feller (not to be confused with other bosses I\'m going to mention) I decided not to go for it (it appeared he was lining someone up for the role). Being two steps ahead of where I was, I also felt it to be common-sense to work into the next level first (which I\'m pushing hard for) and leave the guy above me in peace to go for the role I\'d have happily seen him in (sound chap - good drinking buddy, etc).

Eight went for it, three I knew of (the guy above me, another feller I used to work with and then a new starter) and the other five were likely external.

We found out today who got it, and the winner was the new starter. I say new starter, she only got a contract in November if I recall correctly. Pretty green I\'d say, but no reason why she can\'t get on in life. The thing that riles me up is this - the lady in question worked for a firm represented in its logo by a black horse. Hell, it might even be called Black Horse (Lloyds TSB) :D. This is where the trouble begins.

I started my job 3.5yrs ago. Roughly 2.5 yrs ago, a lady came in to take over the head position (below the big boss feller). Her previous job was with Lloyds. Over the period of a year or so, we gradually saw people coming into the business from the position of Temp through to fully blown contracts, all of them women, all of them from - wait for it - Lloyds. The positions filled are pretty nice ones too, such as her understudy position, Complaints, Section 81 (Councils, roadworks, etc), Despatch (my dept), as well as the bog-standard call-taking. When the head lady was promoted on to another part of the business, her understudy came in and took the role, and has seemingly set up a part of the office that can only be described as the ex-Lloyds section. Anyone who was with Lloyds has been manoeuvred into a position within her team or - at worst - very close to it. Another role came up recently, for an equal position to the one I never applied for (keeping up with me?) and that went to another Lloyds worker. There\'s a new role in place now, just filled by an ex-Lloyds worker, and another forthcoming one with another ex-Lloyds person being given the nod. With this other job now taken by the girl below me in my team, we have the full-house of ex-Lloyds employees in positions of authority or influence (or even in \'easy\' 9-5 roles that are coveted given our shifts).

I HAVE HAD A FARKING TITFUL OF THE NEPOTISM THAT HAS MADE MY WORKPLACE A JOKE.

Sorry for boring you, but I had to vent somewhere. I REALLY HAD TO VENT.

I\'m uber-pissed off.

Rev,

Sorry to hear about that. Have a drink for me. If I was there, I\'d buy you a pint.

It really cheeses me off when there is obvious or semi-obvious nepotism or favoritism. You KNOW they probably recognize this and don\'t care...

apply at Lloyds? Work there for 6 months.

Then come back at a promotion....

****

Sorry, I really do know where you are coming from. Last project my boss quit before the project was done. I filled in his position and mine to the end (about 6 months) - and won an award for the project. The the big boss puts me back in my old position and hires me a new boss for this new project.

I completely understand your justifiable anger.
It\'s one of the reasons I\'m no longer in the Education Department.

sorry to hear about that rev. i\'d say apply for the job anyway, always good to have the practice and in some places they hold it against you if you don\'t apply for new jobs (even if they are in specialties you don\'t like, if you work where i do!)

chin up fella, get some painting done!

Scandalous fella, but try not to lose too much sleep or positive energy over it. It\'ll only chew you up.
You said it was a \'stable\' job, perhaps that\'s why they\'re hiring from the old Black Horse lot.

Mind you, you\'d think anyone from the banking sector would be keeping an extremely low profile at the moment.

@scott: or promotion=more money=more minis= more badly painted mini (talking bout myself)=more frustration=less good quality work at the office or wherever=getting fired= no money=no minis :(
So no Scott, not quite so simple :D

that sounds like complete and utter bs to me unfortunately there are three options that might remedy it and only one that keeps your job safe.

the one that keeps your job safe involves shutting the hell up and keeping on with your job. If you have financial commitments such as mortage or family then this is the choice for you yes it sucks but we have to look after our own.

now the three slightly dodgy ones.

1)go to the papers, be a whistle blower with accurate annotaited accounts and embarrass all involved. Be prepared to lose your job.

2)apply for any position however unqualified and if it goes to a woman or an ethnic minority claim discrimination and tke out a nuisance suit. be prepared to lose your job and face a big legal bill.

3)go to your boss and say wtf? is going on and explain your grievance. be prepared to lose your job or end up working in the full knowledge that there is some serious bs going on and they dont care.

lots of negatives to these and i would only suggest these for the highly moraled or the risk taker, mostly going to get a negative response but at least a small chance of a positive outcome.

Unfortunatley the New Labour versoin of \"great britain\" doesn\'t encourage hard work and enterprise, merely sloth, nepotism and incompetence as long as you have the right connections.

To succeed in new labours britain know the right people and jump on the gravy train on which you can ride forever or simply give in and steal the money of those few hard working souls who still aspire to a great future for themselves and the country they love.

i may be very drunk however :drunk::drunk::drunk: please forgive the rant :cussing:

That happened when I worked at BT, but in reverse.

A talented departmental manager left and took all the decent staff with him lol

Serves them right. BT are a set of scrotes!

Ah, thine words are as unto a balm that doth soothe!

I\'ve kept my lip buttoned today, and won\'t even discuss the matter until someone engages with me, but it\'s surprising the kind of people that have mentioned it to me with a look of disbelief on their faces, people from outside the normal sphere.

Such is life though, eh!

I\'m going to zip it and crack on, but I\'ve not offered any congratulations. That\'s life I suppose. I just can\'t go along with it by entering the spirit of it all as otherwise I feel I would be giving the regime the thumbs up. Keeping silent is the best way...

And all of us here on CMON realize how hard it is for you to be silent...:p

Seriously, take the weekend and relax, do something for yourself and have some fun!

Ach, I\'m working the weekend as well! Good call though. It was my first day back today after man-flu, and I found out the news during my absence.

I\'m going to give her the nod on the way out. This brassneck of mine has to cease! lol

Hoot hoot! Scott was left on his lonesome! Hoho! lol

I gave her the word as she left today. I was hoping to engage in a dialogue, but she just gave some bland platitude about there being many challenges ahead but we\'ll meet them.

Hooray!

I need to drop this whole thing now. I\'ve done my bit. Surely they\'ll leave me in peace, dinosaur that I am :(

Is BT British Telecom?

Just curious to know what you did for them Scott. I work for a \'major telephone company\' myself.

The thing I made sure I had in life was a job where I could leave at the end of the day, and not have to take it home with me. I hope that\'s your situation. So many people I know are in positions where they can work every minute of the day if they want, and the lure of cash is a big one.

Hopefully there is enough seperation for you that at the end of the day, it\'s home time and maybe a pint of whatever, a movie, or maybe even picking up a brush and doing a little painting.

But make sure when you get to work you bottle that angst up inside. Keep it in your emotional cellar, feeding it scraps and keeping it barely alive, until a proper time and place to air out your grievances and bring that palid, nearly rotten angst squinting out into the sunshine ready to make it\'s place in your work world.

You can do it!
