My work computer is so old I can only play Civilization III, Alpha Centauri, and Space Rangers on it.
I talked our IT tech and he\'s looking at getting me a new computer that can at least handle City of Heroes.
Which means I\'m going to have to transfer over the 5 gigs of music and videos over to the new computer.
Man, work sucks.

I really like my weekend work, I get to sculpt a lot during summer, when noone wants to be in a museum without aircondition lol - it\'s just a bit stressy during winter sometimes, but since they closed the IMAX next door (no combined tickets anymore...) it\'s gotten less as well...
sometimes you get a lot of retarded people that are just bored and out for fights (guess that\'s the same in any public area), but my boss fully understands when i bitch back for a reason lol

On the other hand I hate my school. I am now studying in my 6th year and apart from losing a year to civil service (including psychological aftermaths) and close to that amount because of relationships I could be ready by now if the government didn\'t cut university budgeds by 48%, disallow staff without habilitation to mentor master diploma projects, foster an elite thinking and the like which in certain departments subsequently resulted in 35 people instead of 10 working on 5 lab slots...
the general attitude of profs when it comes to do more than standing in front of 300 people lecturing without answering a single question on topic, I regularly had to wait 6 months and once even a year on a grade for a thesis...
the slacking bureaucratic apparatus and constant reforms in the university laws and curriculum...
I already have an offer to fill a position in my department after i finished my master degree, but due to all of the above resulting in me having to wait another year for a prof to mentor my diploma thesis they will probably take another person. The stupid thing is - I am not even sure if I wanted it anyway...even though I always aimed to work in research I don\'t think I want to be a part of this mess...

Currently considering doing the paedagogic and botanical blocks I miss for being a biology teacher and aim for a job where you have 3 months a year off :p

Nah, don\'t get me wrong. I work for a synchrotron ring.
Now this ring basically emits radiation when we have it running, therefore we cannot go inside and fix it while it is running. We are scheduled for maintenance and troubleshooting four days every two weeks, so when I do real \"work\" it is in those four days or unless the machine is down due to a problem.
We also have a few projects outside and operating the ring during the week so it\'s not like we do nothing. It\'s just we do the real \"work\" on those four days and generally only when we know there is something we need to look at.

However when we do get into the real \"work\" it can be very, very physically and mentally trying.

Imagine working on fixing a 3 inch busted water pipe in ice cold water up to your ankles and you have to lay down to get to the leak, surrounded by power supplies rated for 10,000 volts, or trying to take a part a RF cavity with a permanent magnet that pulls all your tools making each socket wrench weigh around 25 lbs while sitting up on a frame work of I-beams 20 feet above the ground.
Almost every part we have must either be custom made, designed and built in house, or bought and modified in house. It\'s not like you can pop over to the local hardware store and buy the needed parts for a synchrotron.
And here\'s the fun part...no one is truly qualified to do this job, there is no real training for it. Sure it helps to have a physics background, but that is far more useful to the researches who use the machine for experiments. You kind of just fall into the job and learn as you go.

So, it can be at times a very stressful job, but there\'s no dress code (I often go to work in shorts and sandals), I get my own office, and as long as my work is done or nothing is going on my boss lets me goof off.
But the best thing or the worst, depending on your personality, is an almost complete independence on the job, I know what has to be done, I do it and very rarely have to report or answer to anyone. I get to make lots of on the fly decisions and am backed up by my boss almost 100% of the time because I make good calls. I never have to explain my actions anymore.

Hehehe
i didn\'t believe this thread was going to get so huge.
it\'s my time to start ranting, but i\'ll do it in dot points:
1. i have three managers. one is male, two are female.
2. it\'s mcdonalds.
3. my colleagues (workmate is not the appropriate statement here) are total flockwits. they can\'t do their job.
4. Three hours a week (thank god for loadings).
5. It\'s very stressful. people have a tendency to shout, plus the fact that i am a very timid person and that i seem to attract total hatred of me. seriously, i seem to be the person who gets to cop the sh!t from everyone else. I have broken down on the job about 4 times and nothing has improved. in fact, it has probably gotten worse. the advantage is that the job is so menial that i can well and truly switch off. i can wash up dishes with my eyes closed. literally.
I\'m getting transferred soon so that i can get more shifts, but the store is right next to my school so there will be people there from school - and that\'s gonna be hell.

I\'m currently waiting on KFC for a call back. because i\'m gonna go insane.

Missed this thead until now...

Why? Too busy working.

We are launching 2 new warehouses with over 200 new employees, more then doubling the complexity of our buisness and it\'s all to get done in three weeks.

Biggest beef though, it\'s 10:00PM on a Sunday night and I am at work (and been here since about noon).

Of course I can\'t complain too much as I am able to be on cmon on and off as I am here for \'support\' only.

I absolutely HATED working for my Dad. Mostly because the employees knew that he wouldn\'t protect us from them. They tended to take out their frustrations on us. Nothing really dangerous. Swirlies and upside down in the trash cans mostly. Luckily, I never got my nether regions painted like my cousin! lol
