Working Stiffs

Time spent away from the forums should be time well spent! :D

On that thought, I actually got a job I really enjoy recently (I\'ve been stayathome mom for last three years). The pay isn\'t great, the hours are killer, I\'m out in all kinds of weather, and it\'s physically challenging... but I love it! I\'m working in the horse stables at the local college (www.wilson.edu). I currently have 44 charges under my care and will probably have up to 72 when the regular semester begins. I\'m tired and sore and pretty dirty by day\'s end, but I really like it there. I even just had to take pictures!

I know there\'s been a few other \"what\'s your job?\" threads, so what I\'m asking,.. to give it a different spin,.. is \"Do you love you job or hate it? What would you rather be doing? What\'s your dream job?\"

And if you have workplace photos to share, put them here! Let\'s see what you\'re doing when you\'ve not sitting there reading these forums, you slackers!! ;)

I Love my Job... I also work with animals. The thing I hate is when we have fill in Doctors. Because a lot (actually only one is a _ _ _ _ _ ) Some really dont care any more and could care less if your pet died there on the table, as she get upset because the owners care about the animal a lil to much. She is the type of doctor who will look at your pet and tell you to put it to sleep to rather than treat it because it my cost a few pennys. So many people have just come crying out of the exam room because of her tone. No bed side manner at all.(thank god she is Gone) (and P.S. many clients call her Dr. Death).... After a 5 year stand off and a walkout of a few employees, HA HA she quit! Then called a few weeks later seeing if we needed help! She now only works at emergency hospitals at night) (if i know what hospital shes at I\'d steer clear!)
HA HA good riddance, and the CLIENTS don\'t want her back for S_ _ T.
But if you couldn\'t tell i work at an animal hospital. Would love to work with them all my life but the pay isn\'t great. So eventually i shall move on.

I sorta love my job. My Masters is in teaching, and my BA is in history thus I should be teaching History on a HS level. However since I don\'t coach a sport I am an underpaid teacher\'s aid. I hate many elements of my job. I work with useless teachers who would rather watch sports center and make freinds with students then actully teach. I work for administrators who have no back bone and will bend over for parents much to the detriment of students.
However I love workinf with the kids, there are some real wonderful kids I have made breakthoughs with and I have great rapport with.
On the bright side I am off on summers and get paid all year long so I can paint on my free time without having to worry bout curriculum.

Come I need help and so does DM of Doom
I am a gardener DM is my best cohort ever. It is hard and grueling but it is painting with nature. Color and greens.I would not trade my profession except to help my kids and thus the home school mom syndrome of late but school is over in two weeks then a chain saw, weed eater mower are my tools yes the wrong end of a shovel as is said, and in exhaustion .. I shall paint. Painting is for when my body breaks in hopes it will help me deal with the reality of age. We have plenty of room Galante :D lots of heat to share and soon the winds will come, but I am glad I am outdoors to feel it all, good and the bad, I will take pictures. It will be fun I bring my camera sometimes but will for sure now often. Dolphins anyone?

Any room for a disgruntled carpenter, TAB? Sounds like heaven the way you describe it!

I love carpentry, but am not crazy about my job. Became an organ builder (NOT sexual innuendo!) due to the romantic dream of building furniturethat would please people...the reality is that I take part in a team that builds organs, make pieces and assemble. Most of the special work here at the shop gets done by a CNC point to point router, so much of the exacting work has been taken away from us. Don\'t use hand tools too much any more in the course of the day, planing surfaces to finish them has gone by the board.

Still, I work mostly in solid wood (oak, ebony, maple among others) which is more than most other carpenters do, so life isn\'t all bad.

LP and Duende, working with animals must be very rewarding.

If I take the chance, I\'m going to apply for a substitute teacher\'s job to get the chance to work with people, been doing production all my life, I\'d like to work with living things for a change.:)

I was hoping you would reply, Tracy :)
You have no idea how much I would love to do that, but I guess I\'m just not brave enough :)
I second Marineboy\'s opinion, it really feels like heaven.

And contrary to you, Jerome, I\'m tired of working with people.
Plants and trees for me, please! :)

I\'m sorry to hear that, abstract :(

I\'m a lab technician doing plant molecular biology. I generally like my job, it\'s mentally stimulating, there\'s no physically exhausting or horribly repetitive stuff, the pay is decent and my current boss at least lets me take my days off whenever I like. A lot of people are in science because they are driven by a passion to understand nature or whatever, I do have that to be sure but largely what I do is just a job to me - I leave my work AT work and I think that greatly enhances my enjoyment of the job. This is part of the reason I will never do a Ph.D. I want to maintain my general interest in science and not become hopelessly enmeshed in a narrow specialization.

Duende - like I said in my e-mail to you - we ought to be sisters!!! I love horses (all animials really) and used to work in a barn when I was a kid. I\'m totally jealous - except for the long hours part. Wouldn\'t mind that except I\'m the stay-at-home mom and we\'d have to find a babysitter (which I would hate!).

You\'ll have to show us around next month when we see you! Yay!! :bouncy::bouncy:

I enjoy my job as an analyst programmer, though I touch quite a bit of systems programming too. Every now and then, something will come up that is mentally challenging, requiring intense concentration, some imagination and creativity. That\'s when I become truly passionate about it. :)

Funny thing is; I hate IT. I mean I really hate it. But squeezing the most that I can out of a computer, and making it to what I want it to do, is what keeps me in the job.

Sometimes though, I wonder what if I\'d stuck with my original plans of getting into ichthyology... I think I always will. :)

There seems to be more of a call for ichthyologists these days too. I\'d love it if my daughter went for that kind of career.

I\'m a technical writer... some of the most boring stuff on the planet I think, but it pays fairly well. :)
If I\'d had my way, I\'d have gone into forensic science.

I like IT, it\'s put money in my pocket for 30+ years.
What I dislike about it is the politics , one-upmanship, user ignorance, user non-ingorance and general disregard that IT professionals like my staff and I have to put up with from a few A*******s, who, because that hold a position as a teacher, think that they are better than everyone else who gets their hands dirty occasionally.

:flame: /Rant over.

Sorry about that. I feel much better now. :D

WoW!!! taking care of over 44 horses, I had my hands full taking care of one...but I did enjoy the lowly chores of cleaning horse apples, feeding and hours long trail rides.
