World Expo 2005 question

I have recently become more and more interested in historical minis. It has really opened my eyes to some aspects of miniature painting. I feel I have long way to go..

Today I looked at the World Expo result page and came across a diaroma called \"The end of all dreams\" by Mike Blank. I am absolutely mesmerized by it. Does anyone have a larger picture of it?

I realize that I am to early for pictures... But did anyone go there and saw those beauties IRL?

Myself and Einion were there, and Mike held a seminar talking about the boxed diorama, the figure construction process and painting and lighting. He\'s very good at presenting seminars.

Not only that, he gave a sneak peak on Planet Figure here:

It was his first boxed diorama, and admited it was a big learning experience for him. it was certainly impressive.

Mike quite often lends minis or smaller dioramas to Tennsoldaten in Stockholm, so I\'ve seen quite a few of his pieces (although not the diorama in question). Impressive stuff!

Great to see someone express an interest in historical models here, it\'s usually the other way around where we\'re directing people to here from pF

Yes, and I have to say it works a lot better in the flesh than in the photos we saw prior to Boston.

I don\'t think it was the best boxed dio there though Rob, go on, give us a link to your photos of the one I think was

Hum. okay.. something even nicer..? But what makes this amazing for me is the lighting effect and overall mood, and posing. When I saw it first I thought it was an OSL... and as a such, the best I\'ve seen. But is it natural lighting involved from that window? In that case, it\'s still impressive just not as awe-inspring as I thought.

Did anyone of you paint anything there?

Hi

In his seminar, Mike explained he painted the figures with a view to the light hitting them from the side, so yes there is OSL in play there. But there is a lightbulb outside the window creating cool early morning winter light, with other lights in the room with the dead kings body.

There were a number of excellent boxed dioramas there; another Swedish modeller, Janne Nilsson did some British Para at Arnhem in a building. \"Elvis has left the Building\" was a somewhat controversial model (pic in in the Metals of Honor gallery).
Bill Horan did a piece with over 40 figures in it, and I was chatting to him and Mike Blank when Bill took it apart and I got some pics of the inside (that one Einion?)

Einion and I both entered pieces. Mine were all painted figs, including my CMON 4 figure, which got a bronze medal! . Einion entered the painting category and the Open (for scratchbuilt and converted stuff) and got a bronze and silver medal respectively!

I\'m thinking of visiting a historical convention. (as soon as I\'ve painted something I can enter, that is.) What is the nearest large historical con to Sweden? Euro Militaire?

The nearest show maybe more mainland Europe; although Euro Militaire is pretty big -and is usually the weekend before UKGD, but not always

The Elvis diorama was again a boxed diorama, and was viewed through a Keyhole - you could see the rest of the bathroom to the left of Elvis, complete with mirror and lights etc.
