Would you spend £5.10 on a handful of sand?

I run out of GW sand I bought years ago. Not just any sand, but ‘GW sand’ Oooooooo… with the small pebble like stones mixed in to give a textured base interesting details.

But I was truly shocked yesterday, when I went to buy more and was told at the counter it was £5.10 for their updated grade of sand.
Upon closer inspection, I could only describe it as a ‘handful’ of normal builder/bird cage grade sand. My quiet English reserve went out the window as I said “How much?!... for budgie sand?!” Seriously, I know GW is expensive, and I support the hobby by buying from them rather than ebay, but now they’re being damn right insulting.

If I have kids, I hope they don’t choose this hobby, as it’ll bankrupt me. I think GW release of Apocalypse is also a description of what the aftermath of my bank account will look like.
That’s got to be £50 worth of sand to be used ;)

Errmmm, why buy it then? Go to the beach, have a great day with your kids and pick up some free sand while you are there!!

So long as people support their crazy product pricing they will continue to rip you all off. Their paints are sensibly priced, the rest of their materials are not. Go elsewhere. You dont need to support them, support the little guys instead!! Local independant hobby stores need your cash more than GW.

Completely agree, the old "GW Sand" is fantastic stuff, I've still got a small pot of it at home that occasionally gets brought out :) Personally I now favour aquarium 'micro' gravel, lots of different grades and if you have tropical fish it's something you'll have in the garage.

Sand ain't something I can imagine running out of, but were it to happen I might take a wander around a building supplies shop with a small tub in my pocket. Bags split all the time, they'll be various sands all over the shelves to scoop a little of each into the tub for a nice variety of grains.

Quite often some places have gravel and sand out to show what's inside the bags. Many a time I've grabbed a hand full and placed it in a pocket.

We used to have a tile company that would give two tiles the customer was interested in for reference in their homes, a few friends later and managed to tile a small area we needed for free.

And botulism, effluent left overs, chemical waste, oil spillage, the odd dead seagull and don't forget what the fish do in the water!

Hmmm... now where am I going to find sand and small pebbles? Being in a desert also means that it will be dried and free of any pathogens. For small pebbles or a rocky terrain look, I've also used (fresh) cat litter, but that stuff gets dusty and needs a coat of thinned glue to solid it up more. I only buy the expensive basing things if I have no other option or if it's what's needed, ie- resin water, long grass, fall leaves, etc.. But basic base material is going to come from Mom Nature for me.

I live a couple of hundred metres from the beach however I have to worry about what the Royal Marines do in the water rather than the fish.

yeah GW would try and charge you for that too and say it was a genuine nurgle demon .....ha I can imagine the manager saying ....just one second I've got one in the back ....er it's warm because it was erm ...kept near the radiator yeah that right.:poop:

if you need anything finer than sand, (I think the scales out for 28mm personally), I have a hoover bag full of milliput dust its the grade of talc. Its great as a mud substitute when mixed with pva glue and would probably be a more realistic sand sub with regards to scale im thinking that sand in the 288mm scale would be more like gravel.

Question is, would GW let you play in their stores if they discovered you used free sand?!

They might supply their staff with testing kits, and like Olympic Athletes, after a game they will strip you of your title if found to be using ;)
