When I was a wee lad we bought games where you opened the box, took out the board and PLAYED them. Even if the lights went out they didnt crash. You never needed to upgrade them and the only software problem was the fitness of your brain. Hardware problems involved - hungry dogs, over enthusiastic children, ice cream, or a combination of any of the above. Aaaaaahhhhh......dem was da days............
Okay, today was the first day I didn\'t check the forums right away. My son didn\'t find the game overly interesting, because he prefers things to be more combat heavy. He thought Diablo II was a more interesting game. I, on the otherhand, have become addicted. He just had to beg me to get off his computer. lol
They have some freaky rules in place, which they cleverly disguise as features. Like the fact that the game keeps track of your down time (When you are logged off) and gives you an experience bonus! This is an incentive to NOT play non-stop for 24 hours. They call this nifty feature the \"rest state\", the longer your character is \"at rest\", the higher your experience bonus when you come back on. Usually you start out getting 200% experience rewards, but then that goes down as your character becomes \"tired\". So they give you an incentive to not play as much, after you have shelled out $15 a month to play. They also give synergy bonuses for co-op play, and things like reputation, which effects how people treat you. That part I like, because almost everyone in the WOW world is friendly and helpful. In fact, so far I\'ve only met one jerk who kept wanting to fight me, but it was fairly simple to just ignore him (If you don\'t agree to a battle they can\'t hit you). Since you also get banned for using foul language, racial slurs, or just being mean, it creates a VERY artificialy friendly environment. Since my son is the type to pick fights with everyone he meets and call people \'losers\', he had better learn a whole new style of play real quick!
Did I mention I\'m already in a clan and have leveled much faster then my antagonistic child.

That\'s brilliant. I\'m actually being serious here. One of the problems of going from a cost per hour to a flat per month rate is that there is no incentive for the player not to use system resources 24/7. While you might think it\'s hard for a person to do that, some people go out of their way to attach an AI to the computer to get them to skill up when they are not directly playing the online game. Back when this was a cost per hour game it was their money, but now it\'s the game server\'s money. The ability to give an incentive for offline time is a carrot to discourage auto skilling in a environment normally used to only very large sticks. (You get caught and you loose your character and account.)

yeah, I do kinda like the whole experiance bonus for not being on.....that\'d be good for someone like me who wouldn\'t be able to devote great heaps of time to the game

If you remeber Diablo (I & II), pretty much the only thing to do was kill stuff and level. They have everyone brain-washed into thinking they were having a great time, but really all you were doing was madly clicking a mouse until your fingers bled. I think my son is overwhelmed by the sheer \'openess\' of the game. Diablo was very linear. You went somewhere and killed something, then you went to the next location and killed something else. It was all simple repetition. WOW is more of a thinking person\'s game, giving you an unlimited number of choices of where to go and what to do. I just finished a quest where I had to find a book, and another where I had to save some grapes and gather them up and bring them back to a drunk monk to make wine. Although there is combat, it\'s not the main part of the quest, simply a means to an end. Much more like a traditional RPG, especially since they encourage team play and a \'friendly\' social order. I was on pretty late last night (
) and a lot of people were just hanging out and bullshitting in the town square. There was some good-natured PvP action going on, with people betting on the participants and people trading/giving away stuff they didn\'t want or need. But mostly people were just hanging out and talking; it was pretty cool. But don\'t worry, I\'ll still pop in here a lot... my son doesn\'t let me play much... lol
Yup, considering the lawsuit a short while back over City of Heroes (apparently the character design engine allowed you to create characters that looked rather like certain characters belonging to a large comic company.... who objected to the fact) it\'s not really surprising that they would try to cover themselves as well as possible.

right now I\'m just a boring human Warlock (lvl 11), but I\'m thinking about starting over as an undead warlock; that zombie chick is dead sexy! lol

you say that now, next thing you know you\'re in a shady internetcafe 24/7 trying to score your next fix.. ehm level
Seriously I thought I was out.. I removed the game from my pc, played for one hour on my friend\'s computer, reinstalled the next day and I\'m hooked again.. been up till 3 am today just fishing and talking to some guy I never met. It\'s just that cool. So if you want a social life, never play this game.. if you want something to do forever, well try this out for one day!

My son also plays WOW. $15 a month is a small price to pay, considering I have not bought him any toys ever since the game launched. That is super cheap to entertain someone month after month.
Great game though, I was lucky enough to join a really good guild and just killed the big boss of the game twice in the last 3 days - Ragnaros. Really awesome! Wish some of you play on my server. I can so hook you up with stuff.
