Well they finally did just as was mentioned in a former forum, what does this mean for us all ?
Space

Just thought this was apt as steelcult has logged out for the time being.

I\'m gobsmacked that the thing got up there, but I fancy booking a seat :D

An apt tribute indeed!

I rather fancy a trip, too. Perhaps we can get a CMON convention going on a flight. Maybe we\'d get group rates!

Funny....

When I saw that news this morning I thought for sure I\'d see a \"WTF\" heading....Then I remembered Lloyd was heading to the sandbox...

So, do these guys win the X Prize?

cool!

Ok yeah, I remember that little caveat...

I was thinking though that once someone finally does do it, there will be some fine print saying \"you have to bring back moon cheese\" to collect the prize...lollollol

What it really means is that NASA has got to do some serious accounting for all the US tax dollars they\'ve spent. lollollol

The most famous one I can recall is the $2million they spent to develop a pen to write in space. The Russians took a pencil. ???:p

That\'s more or less an urban legend, Dragonsreach - well, at least the story is not complete as you tell it. There\'s more to it: The Russians DID use a pencil while American\'s spent money on the aforementioned pen, BUT the Russian pencils would very easily break in space and damage vital spacecraft systems. So the money definitely was used with a good reason.

I find it interesting that this has finally come about.
You see, as an avid fan of classic science fiction, every early Sci-Fi writer who predicted space travel anticipated some rich guy funding and/or building the ship on his own, without any government involvement. No one I know of predicted a prestige war between two gigantic nations.
Well, we finally have the rich private individual heading to space.

Dr. Bob

but not THAT Dr. Bob

They will if they do it again in the next two weeks.

I think the X Prize requires 3 people in the ship on the 2 trips (within 2 weeks), so this flight doesn\'t count technically.

Still, it\'s pretty cool!!!

Quite right, Dr. Bob. This doesn\'t count for the prize. It was just the initial manned test flight of the equiopment. The pilot was the first non-governmentally man in space. To get teh prize they need two three-man flights within two weeks. This is a big step forward, none the less.
