nice work but waaaay too clean. needs not only more mud and dirt scruffing up too. some texture wouldn't go amiss on the fabric as well

Would have to agree. The cloth is too smooth, and it make it feel 'plasticy'.

On the plus side, that's some very neat painting! The gun stock is really well done, as is the face, helmet and base.

Yep virtually Parade ground clean.
Plus to me theres too solid and fresh a face. Under ther strain that they lived in faces change, lines and shadows become more apparent.
The uniform shows no wear or sweat marks and as for the Canvas and Brass, no dirt or tarnishing, and both of those things pick up dirt like a bleeding magnet.
(One of my great uncles was a Sergeant in the Trenches and I remember him talking about never being warm, dry or clean. Despite the rigourous efforts everyone was drilled in.)

I like the way you did the shadow in the beard area on his face, like is hasn't shaved for a few days. How did you achieve that effect? I understand what the others are saying about being too clean, but I still think you did an excellent job.

I agree on the face look at this picture:

See how deap the shadows are, especially under the eyes.

I wish I had a beard like that if I didn't shave for a few days! I look like that roughly half an hour after exiting the bathroom...

O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,—
