The quake, said to be the worst in more than 100 years, has killed up to 40,000 people, and left thousands of others homeless. Officials say the death toll could climb even higher as teams comb the wreckage for bodies. Some 42,000 people were injured.

Forget piffling little hurricanes, here we have a REAL natural disaster, and in a country that isn\'t the most powerful in the world.

Here are some people that really need help, get out ya brushes...

The cynical part of my mind is beginning to think that GW made a deal with the devil to cause all these natural disaters to increase mini sales from all the painting for charity thats going on.

The other cynical part of my mind is saying that God is sat there going, \"Boy, mankind is getting stupider, 3 warnings and they STILL haven\'t got the message...\"

I think this centuary is just warming up (literally), we are gonna see a heap more natural disasters, especially floods, droughts, hurricanes, sea level rise etc, watch out, the end is nigh...

Hate to say it but it was inevitable. We abuse this planet with no regard for the consequences. I feel for the victems but I think it will get alot worse.

We people are pretty stupid, yes, but I don\'t really think we are the cause of earthquakes. We haven\'t got that far yet.

unfortunately earthquakes are not a result of mankinds abuse of the planet.

and it does make the hurricane disasters seem smallscale. They\'re talking about entire generations wiped out in Pakistan as many kids were at school when it happened. Sad indeed.

If all international fighting could stop and help each other regardless of size and stature, it is the individuals that suffer the most.
You know I will paint does not matter to me what or, what country it involves. Pain is a human condition it does not matter where you live it feels no different and no less devastating.

I agree to an extent that we may not yet be responsible for earthquakes (underground nuclear testing?) but the sheer amount of people on this planet makes most natural disasters devestating in the sheer number of deaths. My heart goes out to these people I hope they can rebuild and will do what I can to help. Sorry if I sounded a bit cold you can really see emotions (except for smiley things) thru a keyboard.

It was popular down here to blame nuclear testing for Earthquakes. Having stood on the side of a volcano and seen the power of these things, nuclear weapons are trifling (despite what Hollywood would have us believe). Earthquakes will always be with us, at least as long as the planet is geologically active. We will stop earthquakes the day mankind stops Continental Drift.

My only fear is the international community won\'t give as much. Our government immediately announced $10 million to the US for Katrina, we have so far pledged $500 thousand for this one. I would hate to think we will give less.

I think it\'s $50 Million pledged by the US. Not sure what our own (UK) govt has promised.

All I can do is what I always do...give a donation to a charity. Small, inadequate drop in the ocean I know. But it\'s something.

I actually just came back from India. I totally missed the news since I was working that day and then rushing off to catch my plane. Never knew what was going on in the North till I heard a bit on it on the plane.

To add to Orc-trader\'s comment, donate to charity to try to help them out here. They are going to need it. I was in Bombay which was hit by a flood in August and they are still working to get all that damage fixed.

I\'m confused... why would Australia give the US 10 million for Katarina? I can understand sending blankets or helicopters or medical teams and other specialists, but why money? Or was it for the displaced people to rebuild their lives? That would make more sense.

I may be confusing everything with Hurricane Stan mind you. What happened to the coverage of that disaster? Naff all really on the news because it ain\'t in the US I suppose?

To quote a columnist I heard on the radio: \"sometimes even disasters can be out of luck\". Since the Pakistan earhquake is happening at the same time the news on the Stan victims has been snowed under. It\'s kind of like with the Tsunami disaster when all of a sudden the Sudan took a second place. And the China floodings taking a second place after the US hurricane. Sad, but that\'s the way it goes in the world news. :(
