im only 30 and this depresses me how far we\'ve strayed from COMMON SENSE.

and how many people accept this new form of thinking as if it were the superior way.

\"He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither.\" -Benjamin Franklin, one of our FOUNDING FATHERS* (never know in our modern age how many people forget)

Not that bad?
In daily life no.
But any deviation from routine and you can quickly find yourself mired in this kind of BS.
Cumulatively, as a nation, it IS REALLY THIS BAD if not WORSE.

it\'s true though. it seeps into every aspect of our lives. We are now concerned with ensuring a law is in place instead of common sense. Someone doesn\'t like smoking? Well dont be a dick and light up in front of a mother and child! if you have kids stop smoking in the house! We don\'t need to triple tobacco taxes and squeeze the industry out of the arena (and in the process ruin hundreds if not thousands of tobacco farms which are a major income for the american southeast).

The media is really to blame. When was the last time you saw a major news story that WASN\'T about a school shooting, Economics, or Michelle Obama\'s f***ing dress.

I need to find a log cabin in the Yukon. Grow my own food and hunt deer, paint minis, and shoot anyone who comes within 1500 feet. now THAT\'S progress!

There was a reason why communes were so popular in the 60\'s and 70\'s.

They have automation nowadays.
We could have automated guns, that way trespassers wouldn\'t interrupt our painting.

What I meant is that it - the situations - aren\'t that bad. Maybe there are rare cases like that, otherwise that\'s just the kind of over-sensationalized tripe being fed to \"the people\" by some of the media giants..ahem..

While some of the examples you posted have merits and could be discussed the two I quoted are just wrong.

Nothing justifies beating/hitting kids, and I would never accept anybody hitting mine.

Scenario 357:
Stephen, a \"Negro\", wants to go to the same school as white children who live nearby.

1957 - Stephen is forbidden to attend the school, and instead must attend a run-down segregated school across town. His parents go to city hall to object, and are beaten by a crowd.

2009 - Stephen can attend the nearby school, which is fully multi-racial, but alas features well-meaning but underpaid teachers, insufficiently funded classrooms and science labs, and no music or art programs at all. His biology textbook sometimes has a sticker reminding him that \"evolution is just a theory\".

My point being, things are not getting worse, they\'re just changing. The past was certainly not golden, and many things have improved vastly.

Somewhat true. Certain things have vastly improved, however, not all change is good or for the better.

I blame it on moral busybodies from both sides of the aisle.

I really dislike the general romantization of the past, and the \"good old days\". I haveno problem with people who appreciated the times in their lives they would call the golden years, maybe a really fun youth or whatever, but to say things are bad now and better back then is goofy.

Things are the way they are today as a direct result of behavior from 50 years ago and so on. If corporal punishment on children worked so well why did things progess to where they are today (I spank my kids, for the record)? We\'ve progressed as a society that no longer hads to teach duck and cover in classrooms for fear of armageddon, rascism is still around, but we\'ve battered down the walls of segregation. My relatives in Germany can now visit each other freely, and so on.

So the good old days just don\'t work for me. Sure there are over-reactions now adays, but lets not pretend they didn\'t always exist. The world is not going to hell, it\'s changing and evolving. Communes and stuff existed for like minded people to get together and live and communicate with liek minded people. We\'ve got the internet.

I\'ll take today vs. any period every in the history of man. I\'m optimistic, and I refuse to put on the rose colored glasses for the days of yesteryear. For all the problems we face in our day vs. the past I\'d bet we\'ve got 2-3 new advantages at the least. 50 years ago my wife would\'ve died with alongwith my first child in labour.

I\'ll take \'09 guys!

Two Words: Doctor Spock.

Ruined a generation.

Edit: I am not a parent, but I do have tons of nieces and nephews, much younger cousins and whatnot.
Every child is different. For some fear of disappointment is enough, some a time out works, for some you need spankings.
It seems to me the biggest problem we have with the youth of today is that we fail to teach them that actions have consequences, sometimes dire consequences.
We\'d rather pump them up with Ritalin, or stick them in front of a computer to get them out of our hair, and then when the child does do something we tend to blame everyone other than ourselves.
Read the articles, it\'s always someone else\'s fault. Video Games, society, violence on the TV.
You\'ll never see one parent owning up and saying \"You Know, maybe if I\'d have actually paid attention to what little Billy was doing, he might not have....\"

Disagree. The ruined generation was able to take us to where we are today, which I will gladly label a vast improvement over any period of time. Even the financial crisis which is on the tip of everyone\'s tounge is still better then, say, a draft to fight a war you want nothing to do with. That\'s an extreme example granted.

But the ruined generation just did things differently, I won\'t agree that they did things worse.

Disagree. Individuals took us where we are today. Society as a whole not so much.

Disagree. My society is bitchin\'!lol

I really don\'t think things are bad. At all. It\'s just that we get to hear about everything, and the focus has always been on the negative. Always and forever. Society rules!

Maybe you should move up here, Evil Dave.lol

heh, heh, heh.
See I started this...

Anyway.

Personally, my biggest beef is that the busy-bodies are trying to make rules to cover everybody, but they end up making crimes fit punishment instead of vice versa.

Each individual is just that, individual.

You can\'t cover everything under a blanket of laws. It causes more problems than it helps.

Trying to put everything in black and white, life or death, that\'s making everything end up extremist, and oppressive.

The advances that we have, came from individuals, and groups of individuals.

If you take away that individuality, (or IMHO worse- force conformity) there will be no more ambitious, creative, and innovative INDIVIDUALS, to make those advances.

Strife and conflict cause growth and change, but change is a pendulum, each push in the other direction pushes towards, and then past balance.

Actually, I like where I am, simply because I\'ve made it very hard for society to be involved in my business.

I think this is what truly bothers me about the present is the invasive deterioration of privacy.
I\'m all for doing what the hell you want as long as it\'s not hurting anyone else. Gay Marriage? Go for it.
Abortion? As long as it\'s not on my dime, I don\'t care.
Drugs? Once again if you\'re not hurting anyone, go for it. (However, if you do hurt someone I expect the law to come down on you like a ton of bricks.)
The problem comes in when society doesn\'t like what you\'re doing and essentially makes up some reason you shouldn\'t be doing it.

For example: Smoking

Second hand smoking kills: If I\'m smoking in my yard of three acres, I\'m not hurting anyone.

You\'re raising the price of Health Care: Not as much as the unwed mothers, the illegal aliens, and myriad others who end up not paying a dime and foisting the higher costs on us that do pay.

It\'s for your own good: Screw you. I decide what is for my own good. If I decide to kill myself slowly then piss off it\'s my choice. To use the Liberal abortion phrase: \"Who are you to tell me what to do with my body?\"

And my personal favorite:
It\'s for the children: Screw that. I have no kids, I don\'t smoke around kids, and not one dime of that money is actually going to go to the kids.
