Yet another bit of proof that \'artists\' are wankers

LIVERMORE, Calif. - It didn\'t take a nuclear physicist to realize changes were needed after a $40,000 ceramic mural was unveiled outside the city\'s new library and everyone could see the misspelled names of Einstein, Shakespeare, Vincent Van Gogh, Michelangelo and seven other historical figures.

\"Our library director is very frustrated that she has this lovely new library and it has all these misspellings in front,\" said city councilwoman Lorraine Dietrich, one of three council members who voted Monday to authorize paying another $6,000, plus expenses, to fly the artist up from Miami to fix the errors.

Reached at her Miami studio Wednesday by The Associated Press, Maria Alquilar said she was willing to fix the brightly colored 16-foot-wide circular work, but offered no apologizes for the 11 misspellings among the 175 names.

\"The importance of this work is that it is supposed to unite people,\" Alquilar said. \"They are denigrating my work and the purpose of this work.\"

Alquilar said it took her quite a bit of her own time and money to create and install the work, and that it sat idle at her Santa Cruz studio for two years until the city cleared the way for its installation.

There were plenty of people around during the installation who could and should have seen the missing and misplaced letters, she said.

\"Even though I was on my hands and knees laying the installation out, I didn\'t see it,\" she said.

The mistakes wouldn\'t even register with a true artisan, Alquilar said.

\"The people that are into humanities, and are into Blake\'s concept of enlightenment, they are not looking at the words,\" she said. \"In their mind the words register correctly.\"

Certainly NOT disputing your main premise of the wankerdom of most artists:D she does have a point. I used to do signage a lot at one point and it wasn\'t unusual to be concentrating so much on getting the letters and spacing right, that I\'d end up misspelling something. That\'s what proofreaders of one form or another are for..

I guess what it says is that the politicians who approved it for installation are just as big of wankers as the artist.

Oh, QUITE true. Her pretentiousness is astonishing :D
And the setting is just fantastic - in front of a library lol

Its right up there with our former VP choosing an elementary school spelling bee to show that he doesn\'t know how to spell \"Potato\"
Of course, worse yet was the fact that he was handed the answers by a teacher who also apparently didn\'t know how to spell it.lol but don\'t get me started on that

As much as I am generally in favour of bbq-ing intellectual sacred cows, English now has a standard system of spelling. Back in Shakspear\'s day, spelling was not standardized, so Shakespere (a very literate man) spelled his own name in different ways on different documents. This is no longer considered acceptable. If you screw it up, you\'ve made a mistake. Fix it.

This woman gives artists and artisans everywhere a bad name through her unprofessionalism. I can\'t imagine her ever getting another commission after pulling this stunt.

Not get another commission - please NSA! She\'ll be rolling in them from the press on this. Its another case of \"I\'m an artist, I don\'t live in the real world with you serfs, I live on a higher plain inspired by the real truth\" at work.

But havent we had this discussion before?:D

I know, bloody smart arse.lol

Actually I\'d have called her a thick ****. Fancy not stepping back to check. Every workman I know and every body who does something at close quarters has to step back now and again to double check.

If she\'d said \"Whoops I\'m Dyslexic. I should have got it checked.\" I could have had sympathy but she\'s blatantly trying to shift the blame.

Anyhow who\'s thicker the misspelling \"Artist\" or the council members who\'re paying her airfare.
To coin a phrase \"You break it -You fix it\".

Artist? Right...imagine one of us in the following conversation:

\"Here you go Mr. <guy paying me to paint>, you figures are all finished.\"

\"Thanks, but you highlighted the blue cloak with green, and the eyes are painted on the cheeks!\"

\"Well, if you were a TRUE artisan, you wouldn\'t mind - you\'d see that all colors are of the same truth.\"

\"Well, can\'t you change it?\"

\"For another $50, sure!\"

Any freelancer here does this, they\'ll be lucky to be allowed to BUY the metal, let alone get paid to paint it. Sheesh. The only plane ride I would have paid for would be to the middle of the ocean.:bouncy:

\'Artists\' or people who THINK they\'re \'artists\' really get on my tits.

Not you, Tammy! You\'re the one sacred cow we probably won\'t cook up for din-dins.

Unless we get really really hungry or something.

This story is really funny! It reminds me of an incident here in Sweden a while ago. A small suburb of Stockholm had a public square fixed up and made nice and the officials decided to hire a well-known artist to do an installment there. He turned the centre of the square into a huge marzipan cake with fake grass in a really nasty green colour and a big, pink, cracked sphere in the middle to represent a marzipan rose. It looked ugly as hell and I don\'t think anyone of the folks who lived there liked it. I don\'t know what happened to it, but the officials should have made a better choice of artist since this artist is well known for pissing people off.

I think anybody with half a brain could guess that she plain and simple f**ked up, and was trying to avoid fixing it (for free, thus reducing her profit on the piece). I think all that crap about Blake\'s Enlightenment could only fool the most gullible of suckers, or at least it sounded like complete bullshit to me the moment I read it.

If I were the artist then, I would come in and lay a tile on it with the simple statement--- sic--- For those of you not in the know, it means misspelled and I kno (sic) it is.
lol
Where\'s that 6 large they promised.

always \"one bad apple\"....

:)As an artist who did commissions for years, that gal is what I like to call a Diva Artist, aka..pain in the ass ...makes life hell for the rest of us working stiffs.

I have spent hours talking with my clients about what they wanted done. Can’t tell you how many times I had to change a portrait until complete satisfaction was reached. Yes, show horse owners are a demanding lot.. LOL

Bottom line, if there was a mistake on my part, I would fix it at no cost to the client.
