Your first Games Day...

I was flicking through my old GW \'Fantasy Miniatures\' book from 1990, and I suddenly remember that it was by happy conincidence the first GD event I\'d ever been to. I\'d completely forgot my excursion to the Derby Assembly halls all those years ago.

It all then came back to me - the huge, huge queue to get in. The fact that I got to see all the GD entries for about 10 seconds before the swarm of people came along.

I also remember having a chat to Colin Dixon and Trish Morrison about how they wished they were at home watching the telly - I think they were somewhat suprised that someone wasn\'t asking them the same sort of question they\'d heard hundreds of times during the day.

And the heat. Lack of adequate air-con was not a heady combination - especially as there seemed to be an overly large amount of rather smelly individuals roaming the plains.

Still, it was an enormously enjoyable day. I never liked the SLayer Sword winner, and thought the prize should have gone to something else (god knows what though), but it was a great day.

Who\'s next?

I\'v only ever been to one, and the best bit about that was leaving the hall and going to get a pint whilst chatting about painting with other people.

Peace and love...

my first games day was awesome...
it was 2000, and i went with a busload of dutch lunatics...
we took the chunnel over, and drove up to birmingham...

the whole time, the englishman who was in charge of the dutch stores kept reminding us that weed was illegal in england, and we shouldn\'t bring any with us(he\'d been stressin\' this for a couple weeks)...so of course, we all lit up as soon as we piled off the bus in briminham, and just about gave the manager a heart attack...

the golden demon entry got us into the event super early...
they handed out big bags of free plastics...
we all marveled at the great black orc sculpt...
i met artist karl richardson, who is still one of my favorites...
talked to the perry twins...
saw the awesome footage of the bloodquest animation on a huge screen...

i didn\'t do well in the demons, but it did inspire me to get serious about my paintin\'...

all in all, the best first games day i could have ever asked for...

cheers
jah

mine was 2006, I wasn\'t into the hobby, but husband was and I got free tickets from work (cos I helped make the video the manufacturing stand shows).
Everyone was really friendly that we met and it made me think it was less geeky and sad than it looked (and I\'d already been wearing down that opinion for many months).
Best one was last year when we entered GD for the first time and met people at the hotel and sitting next to the guy who built the winning scrap demon, whilst he was building it. Awesome work - I congratulated him on being the winner before he was half way through as I\'d finished mine and needed to pass the seat over.
Really looking forward to this year.

i think my first gd was 89, i was still in school and it was still held in derby back then (better atmosphere but no where near big enough for todays attendance numbers)

when i go to gd UK now the best part is the bar, away from the mob and chillin\' with other painters (and that carnosar vignette of niels done is frickin\' HUGE!)

My first Games Day was the first one held in Birmingham which ever year that was, maybe \'93/\'94? I remember a friend had bought a mini from the sales stand and was so sure that the EM team would paint it for him if he took it over to them lol
You can imagine the the look on the EM guys face when a small kid wonders over and says \"paint this for me and I will pick it up before I go home\" lol

I\'m thinking seriously of going to GDUK maybe next year. What time of year is it? I don\'t think I\'d bother with an entry yet, I\'d just go to heckle and get drunk.

not sure on the date ..... was at donnington racing trak and I remember not going i for ages and just watching the cars doing practise laps through a gap in the fence... had a model in the cabinets after qualifying store heat but it had been chipped when th manager transported it down so missed my chance of a demon but did get a shitload of freebies off of some very apologetic GW managers...so all good fun..

first Demon at NIA was 2000 and I picked up silver in regiment with looking back a real cruddy ogre unit that were actually tidied up from my gaming army.

went in 2001 and didn\'t win but felt really ripped off after watching my unit entry sat in the fina three cabinet and then replced by a unit somebody brought in right before the announcements and long after the deadline .. The EM member behind the cabinet literally just pulled mine out and placed the other unit in there without even looking atthem in the box:cussing:

after that I was working for GW for 5 years and attended as staff usually behind the cabinets and on one occasion running a game ..(never again)

then re entered 2007 and 2008 with 3 models fo 3 trophies and hoping thi year to keep the consistency and pick up 1 or 2 more.:drunk:

My first Gamesday was 2003 in LA. I entered the RT tournament, paying $40 to enter, and after I was beat my first round left the tournament because I did not realize that they set up 2 or 3 rounds. I felt like an idiot and mad because I wanted to play more but thought I was eliminated.

At this Gamesday Liliana Troy won the slayer sword for her slaanesh chaos knight. It was the only time the the slayer sword was an actual warhammer.

I had a great time and there were many well painted mini at the golden demon booth. I entered a brother captain that made final cut which made me happy since I had only been painting for a couple of months.

I also convinced Adrian Smith to sketch something in my sketch book. He did not seem too happy about sketching something for me and he only spent like 10 seconds drawing the head of a goblin, but I was happy with it.

First time I went was 2004 I think I took 3 entries with me just to escape the main queue and entered them for fun quite shocked when all three of them got through to the finals :D have been every year since and got through to the finals with an entry or two even though I don\'t take it seriously.

I had to miss last years event because that was the same day I flew out of the UK :( but I am trying to get back home for this years event all going well.

Never wanted to go back in the 90\'s because of the noise and smell of fanboys

First time I went was great to meet up with a lot of the people here and just chew the fat over in the hotel :D

\'95 for me, been every year since.
Got used to the smells, queues and crushes.
But still can\'t abide the damn rudeness of some people. Chris (Genrulpoleaxe) will confirm the rude arrogance of one person in my age group last year.

Gamesday UK has it\'s faults, (search the threads lol) but Last (and previous) Years meet up(s) made a serious difference.

That wasn\'t me then :)

I think the last one I went along to was deffinately better than the previous years mainly maybe because of the organised meet up in the hall before everybody bomb bursted to the hotel

I remember after all my friends got back from GDLA 2003 I was very bummed that I didn\'t get to go.

My first Games Day was LA 2004, I think I was 16. My dad drove me. It was a blast! The highlight for me was seeing all the incredible entries in Golden Demon (I had never seen models of such high quality in person before. Only photos online and in WD), meeting Jes Goodwin (though I don\'t remember who else was there from the HQ studio, and I was too new to the hobby to know many names) and picking up a gold demon in LOTR group/large.

Needless to say it got me hooked :)

aye as over priced as the beverages are, you don\'t have to queue so much and it\'s a lovely relaxed atmosphere

I went to one in the 80s at Eastwood - which, I think would have been at their factory.

It\'s the only one I\'ve ever been to.
