Your Mindset For the Golden Demon

Although I\'m not to be entering this year due to a mishaps involving some white glue and a cluttered desk, I\'d like to hear the views of everyone who enters. Basically what they are thinking when they enter. For instance Ben Bishop, Jen Haley, Victor Hardy and that \"higher echelon\" group would probably go in to win, and practically knowing that they will. With myself on the other hand, I go in knowing I probably won\'t make the first cut, however its fun to just be part of the competition. So for those of us who do enter in the Demons, do you hope that you might pick up bronze, or decide to enter models to comfort those who failed to do so?

I\'m entering for the first time this year, so I really don\'t know what to expect. I think I’ve got what it takes to make the first cut and I’ve got a fairly nice conversion so ..........

There\'s always the niggle in the back of my mind saying \"You could get a bronze;)\" but I’ve been let down a lot at GT\'s etc not even making it in the last 10 for best painted army with stuff that ranks in the eights here. It\'s actually made me doubt my ability quite a bit. For instance last weekend I took 500 points to the doubles tourney led by the mage I have on this site that ranks 8.8. The rest of the stuff is also painted to a pretty high standard and did it make the final 10?

Did it b@£%*!\\cks!

But I’ve reasoned that sometimes the judges can just not go your way. And more than one person came up to me and said \" Why\'s your stuff not there, I wanted to vote for it!\"

I suppose I’ll just have to wait and see. Although come the time of the judging I can guarantee that I’ll be thinking I’m in with a chance, then when I’m not in the final cut I’ll be well gutted :(

Why do we put ourselves through it!!! :p

i\'m entering for the first time too. i \'m not quite sure what to think. i went to salute 2004 and the stuff there blew me away, it kinda said to me \"wake up , you need to put more time in\" later with all the inspiration and with the help of this web site i won a gw local painting competition, and went to london conflict with 3 models and won two categories. put it mildly i was over the moon. bearing in mind i saw some stuff that made me shudder with awe i\'m going in with a level head. think the GD UK is more of a background criteria competition. if you plan something well and carry it off then i think it holds more than the super flashy styles. well thats what i\'m counting on! just meeting all the CMONers will do for me and maybe making it through some of the rounds. but bearin mind if i do get something you will see the widest smile ever seen on a sleep deprived dad!

I\'m definately up for meeting up with some of you guys at the UK Games day.

Does anyone do anything formal to represent CMON? If not i think it would be a good idea to. Just imagine the possible haul of silverware potential there is here!!! :D

And everyone here is so frienly i would be great to have a drink an a chat to share some tips/exchange stories etc.

What does everyone think?

i\'d be up for that. got to paint my entries first, but i don\'t think i\'ll be around the hoardes of gamers too much. getting gw rammed down your throat is ok for a while, but just like cheese ....it grates easily.

by the way what are you going to take your stuff in? box? with display bases and the like? where u at in london? i\'m in Bromley

Aaaahhh! planning....not my stongest point!! :D

Hadn\'t really thought about getting my stuff there!

I was going to drive though, so probably a box and loads of foam etc. I\'m going to try and get stuff done for at least 3 catagories but they\'ll all be the smallish ones; single mini, duel etc. so there\'ll be nothing massive to take.

I\'m just down the road from you in Greenwich. Bromley is probably my closest store. Small world eh!!!!

Also definately up for meeting up there! I\'m all excited now!! :D

Well first time I went I hadn\'t seen this site yet. I entered a few things that had won local painting comps and I thought I stood a chance.

Ha!

When I got there and saw the entries I was amazed, they were just in another league. Its impossible to feel bad when you loose against such great work.

I realised I seriously needed to raise my game.

Because of the 3 category limit in Oz, it makes it a little easier for the lesser painters to get a chance at winning. So the next year I put in a serious amount of effort, I played to my strengths and targetted the less popular categories. I narrowly missed out with my main entry, but by some miracle a \"test\" piece placed.

Now I know I\'m not in the big league yet, but I reckon I can raise my level enough to make a bid in the more popular categories this year.

I\'m gonna be up against some serious competition, but I\'m finding that I\'m really enjoying the whole process of getting the entry done. As long as I improve on my previous efforts, then I\'m happy. If I win, thats a bonus.

Ok Jo motivational statement coming up:-

Get your A**E in Gear!

Seriously I hope you get out of the slump pretty quick.
Why not stop the GD stuff and try painting something else, then go back. Might help.:)

The wise Dragonsreach

I\'d take Dragonsreach advice, right now I\'m working on my Lord of Nurgle (gonna be my first CMoN mini!) and I haven\'t really gotten bored with it yet, I love the mini, but I can understand how you would get into a slump. I can\'t wait to start my GD entry for next year (keep your fingers crossed), I\'ve got big plans for it. I\'m sure time will allow you to return to your GD entry with new ideas, and good luck with your entry! Hope to see it in White Dwarf.

The best motivation is, go to the \"Events\" section of GW website and look at the countdown saying how many days you have till GD. Works magic on me :)

A little something you might also want to try is assembling something else. That\'s what I do when I get tired of my main entry -- I start puting together another piece.

I\'ve got to re-paint part of one of the entries I\'m working on at the moment, it looked good while I was doing it, but I came back to it the next day and thought
\"What the bloody hell is that all about??\" It was kinda funny actually lol

Well, this\'ll be my 6th GD, and the 5th entering golden demon. the first year I entered I got nowhere, the next I got one into the finals, the same for the year after that, last year I got 3 into the finals.

So this year I\'m aiming for a trophy of some sort, although I know I can\'t compete with the \'big guns\', I\'ll just have to hope I can avoid them in the categories I have chosen to enter

I haven\'t entered any miniatures at a GD yet but I know that if I wanted to I\'d only do it if I thought I stood a chance. Just entering for fun knowing I\'d win nothing wouldn\'t give me any pleasure or saticfaction. It\'s all or nothing, baby!

i hope to use it as a good learning experience. never really met any other painters before and the ones that i did meet were always very secretive about what they did. i hope to get the respect from my friends and prospective friends that i have entered it and joined the competition rather than snipe from the sidelines. when you spend 30 hours or so on a model and somebody gives you the acknowledgement for it, that is everything i need. i\'m nervous like the rest of you guys but i\'m also sure that when we all meet up in that long queue kacking ourselves the camaradery will get us through it, and chances are after its all over we will have had a blast!

I went to the chicago gamesday, just to check out the \'caliber\' of the entries...

I didn\'t enter, because I figured I\'d be way out of my league....

But next time, I will bring some entries. I know I don\'t have the skills to compete, but it does say something about just entering....

There were some great entries in Chicago, but there were also quite a few mediocre entries, enough to give me confidence enough to try...

So my mindset, just don\'t embarass myself...lol

There seem to be a lot of us entering for our first time here! Well, I\'ve been waiting a year for this competition. What am I expecting? Nothing. I know that to expect a trophy would be silly, because (let\'s face it) we\'re up against people who have been doing this for years. If I win a Bronze, I\'m going to dance!

However, if I win a Bronze this year, my goal for next year would be Silver, or Gold even! But, if I win nothing, I take it as a learning experience. The time spent converting and painting wasn\'t a waste, but rather helped me develop and expand my painting skills, just as the future projects will, until I am ready to win.

Just be positive, practice, and simply enjoy it.
