After going o Uni today, i decieded to walk home taking photos of sinage and adverts, and anything else that i think could be useful for a design sketchbook. On walking about half way, i had come across Byker metro station which is displaying huge pieces of art in the entrance, i liked the style and imagery of it so i decided to get my camera out and take a few pics.

After taking a few pics i was stoped by police and asked if i had written permission to take photos from Nexus (company who own the metro system), obviously i hadnt, and was told to delete evry photo i had on my camera.

Explaning that only 4 or 5 out the 30 or so photos i had were of this art, i was still told to delete evry photo, and failure to comply would mean me getting arrested, taking to the cop shop and having my camera taken off me until further notice.

So a waste of a day\'s photography. Seriously when did copyright get so bollocks!????

Its probably helped out by thoughts of terrorists scoping out buildings as well.

Its crap they made you delete them all. Did they watch you whilst you deleted them ?

Buy a cheap 16mb card if your taking pics of buildings in public again that way you dont loose all the stuff on your main card.

Somethings bugging me about the way the police opperated with you I just cant put my finger on it.

Shoulda told them to go pound sand. We (people in \'free\' countries) are losing our rights at an alarming rate.

Aye, thats a good idea actually, i got a 16mb one with it, so il start doing that.

And i would have got nicked, bloody pathetic they are.
So if i take a photo in a shop do i need the shop owners permission? If i take a photo in a park, do i need the councils permission?

The only way I can think of them arresting you would be under a section 43 (I think) Anti Terrorism legislation.

And as soon as you got to the station I imagine their sergeant/inspector would\'ve bollocked them for wasting time.

You are NOT breaking any laws by taking photos of public displays or buildings.

I imagine they were British Transport Police, who had been sent out by worried Station staff.

Theie threat to arrest you was probably bluff.

Either way - if I was in your position I would\'ve complied, but asked for their collar numbers and informed them you intended to make an official complaint.

Most likely, it isn\'t! Most likely the policemen were feeling bored and/or very full of self-importance and saw an excuse to push someone around a bit. They know people don\'t know EXACTLY what the laws say in cases like this.

I really hate hearing stuff like this! What can you do though? If you choose to complain etc you\'ll probably just wind up wasting more time. It seems wrong to force you to delete your images especially as there was no warning sign saying that photos in this area are not permitted.

I am NOT a lawyer and do not even play one on TV.

In a shop, probably not unless they say so. It is a public place.

Of a piece of art in a shop - you probably need permission - especially if it is some sort of studio.

I remember a young sailor taking pics of a sub coming into port. The SP made him take the roll of film out of his camera.

Yeah, I\'d be tempted to go back and start snapping shots, but that is just asking for trouble. There are better hills to die on.

But this isnt even in an art shop, or a particularlly \'art\' area, just on a wall on a metro station.

Il remember all this fro iif it happens again! Things is its hard to understand the laws, if you dont know them before hand.

Theyre Just being bastards.
The only case I known of in glasgow of this happening is when some people were taking pictures of where I work, but thats an MOD site.
This is in a city thats FULL of art and displays! Can you imagine taking a pic of the art school? \"Nope, destroy the film, i dont think macintosh would be happy\"...BOLLOCKS! :flame:

Just tell em that you don\'t carry the permission but the uni carries the permission slip.See if they can be bothered chasing it up then.

Then ask them if you can take a picture from their perspective..i.e what does the world look like when your head is stuck up your own ass.

It makes me augh that there are wars going on to ensure our Freedom yet acts like this show clearly we are losing our freedom...Assholes.

Might have but nothing would have stuck I\'m sure. I think it\'s one of those things where had you been older (read as less intimidated by authority) you may not have been bothered or may have been more likely to disobay the instruction. Mind you, your actions were likely the correct ones.

I\'d call Nexus and ask if written permission is necessary to take those photos. I\'d bet it isn\'t. Like everybody else here, I think it\'s garbage and those cops were looking to make themselves feel important.
