Been basing a bit...
Squig base is ready to be primed!
View attachment 29481View attachment 29482
Converted and sculpted up some animals for the dwarf bases. Bought a few thing from reaper a fish for Demi's base that'll give me a chance to play with some under water OSL...
View attachment 29483
A Raven that i converted into a seagull for Canny's base...
View attachment 29484View attachment 29485
And some rats for my base that were just a touch too big but made nice models for me to sculpt my own in the right scale...

Then i did some priming tonight. Hell it was still wet when i took the pics so it's glossy...

There was a lot of time spent waiting for crap to dry this week so I watched some movies with the wife. Ender's Game - blah. Gravity - meh. Man of steel - okay. I also started to try my hand at JW's Shaded basecoat technique. First mini was bad and met an untimely demise under the hammer of frustration.

Things worked against me. It's a new way of working and I went too fast reasoning that if James can do it in 90min so can i with all my experience. No. It's like starting all over again - not a bad thing, kinda fun actually, like a more free form way of painting and I really want to try and learn it. Bones minis are great for learning though because they are cheap right? They are also crap for learning because they are soft on details, heavy on mold lines and when you are trying to learn something new on an unfamiliar figure with soft details it's just too much. I'm trying another one, slowing down and I like where it is going, but the mold lines and soft details have me on the edge of smashing again. I'm fighting my instincts already I don't need to fight the sculpt too.

If this one meets and ugly end I'll try again with a mini I am super familiar with - SPACE MARINES - and simplify my palette to a triad type system. I will expand my set of skills even if I have to smash every single figure I paint in the process!!! Don't worry they will all be cheapies that no one will miss. Although, I may switch to metal so I can just strip and retry on a mini that becomes more familiar each time, but there is something satisfying about the smashing aspect too...

Cheers y'all! :brushwave:

Awesome dude!

Those bases look great! Reaper Bones are not that great right? The gnarly mold lines are kind of a deal breaker. I have a couple of larger figures that I will paint up and throw in the communal mini bin for RPG night but I am pretty glad i didn't do the kickstarter. I was close too. When they first came out everyone was raving about how great the were, meh. Although it does make me want to go buy more metal Reaper minis both those ladies in your picts look pretty fun, you know, to paint ;)

Excellent basing, with some custom made sculpts... The painting is also top notch! For the Bones, I still love them. What I like the most is looking through all these plastic bags from the kickstarter until you find a mini you really like... For the mould lines, yes, it is a pain but with some patience you can get rid of them. Then there are excellent for a quick paint and relaxation between difficult and tiresome projects!

Here one of the old one I have painted from Bones, you can make pretty decent job out of it!

First I love the two models you painted, the end one especially looks like a really fun one to paint. What is she or what line is she from? Now your bases look unbelievable and HOLY SH$t YOUR SCULPTING IS ROCKING. Love the bird and the rat, great job bud. As for your movie excursion, I felt the same way...only I refuse Gravity.

Thanks gang! Yeah reaper bones are not so good, but their metal line is awesome. Although boubi and trystan really have done some great work on the bones minis so I think it may be subjective from the quality of each individual sculpt. The lady with the guitar is astrid and she is one of my fav sculpts of all time. I was all like "Yay I'm gonna paint astrid the bard!" Then i got the mini and was like "boo, I'm gonna try to paint astrid the blob". So much rain here today. Wasn't able to spray the squig base yet, but tomorrow hopefully. Using enamel from a can to make sure its' nice and tough, so i have to spray outside.

Agree completely with the bones. I acrually did some painting on some bones yesterday and with each layer of paint i found more mold lines to remove..grrr. (oh, and i am not lying i actually did do some painting!). I need to paint some of the big bones minis and see how the quality is (Cthulhu, Kaladrax, etc...). They seem to be designed with bone material in mind...if not i will be a tad disappointed that i have a bunch of KS 2 bones coming and probably will stick with Reaper's metals going forward.

It's a cheap polyvinyl version of their metal minis. Very cheap, no need to prime, but cleaning off the mold lines and the missing/blurry details of the sculpts makes them kinda crappy. They are like 2 bucks a pop though so you get what you pay for. I got a few, but I'm gonna stick with metal from now on as it can be stripped and repainted almost endlessly and the details are far more defined. They are a great way to get kids into painting. My daughter loved the bones ghost she painted because it was little like the ones daddy does and we just opened the package and went to town with paint.

Okay, got pretty sick on the weekend. Gonna take it easy for a bit. I also feel out of practice with the paint after all this basing so just gonna do a few quick minis to warm up before I get back to the squig. First up is the dark elf I did using the Shaded Basecoat Technique (SBT). I don't hate it (the mini, not the technique I'm really enjoying learning that), but the sculpt was bloody awful and made it hard to learn a new technique on. That said, here are the remaining steps and the finished lady. Shading, mid tones highlights, dulcote.

At some point I'll post display pics on my blog with a review of the SBT and Reaper's Bones so you can see her from all the angles and get a good look at those mold lines etc :mad-tongue:
The next victim of my SBT practice will be Rosie here:

The Lady Inquisitor is named =][= REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE HOLY INQUISITION =][= so people always call her Rosie - and then die slowly and painfully. This little mini kinda looks like her too with the curly hair, disarming smile and big freaking gun. This cast is of a slightly better quality, but still not too crisp and the mold lines are pretty bold. I will need to take a look at the gallery and Reapers site so I get some sense of what the hell she is supposed to look like before I paint her though. Oh well, at least The Agent Of Chaos gets some decently painted little minis to play with out of this :smirk:

From the Reaper forum, it seems the prevailing practice is to slather Reapers brown liner all over the bones. That allows you to see what you have to deal with. That being said it seems the vast majority of people that are most enthused about bones do not care for anything above mid-tabletop quality and :gasp: do not remove any of the mold lines.

Well at least there is tabletop quality there. A lot of the local folks here seem to just prime or play with bare plastic. Part of the reason I left gaming was I am a bit of a hobby snob and refuse to have my beautifully painted armies trounced by bare plastic atrocities that look like the were put together by spastic 2yr olds. Hell, three color minimum would even be nice o_O
