Zab's Damn it to hell! WIP

Sorry about your kitty, it's always tough to lose a furbaby.

I just wanted to add that along with Bloodhowl's suggestion, I've also used the steam from the boiling pot to straighten small pieces and a hair dryer can work as well. With major moves I've also used a heat gun but you have to be uber cautious with those - not for the faint of heart or slow reflexes. lol!

Thanks Cassar. I may stop there or deepen the shadows with a few interesting colors. Thank you Kathryn, I'm just happy he came home (for a guy from a feral litter I take it as high praise that he chose to spend his last moments with us). I'm still being indecisive about the dragon tail. I like the lines right now; how they all kind of point to the knight, but an upward sweep would fit the reference illustration better...

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of nmm and as such I've never really studied how to do it properly, rather just looked at it as a thing. Now, the way you've painted the skull on the cute girl on page one is excellent. I love how you've painted the highlight surrounded by a darker patch. I'm not sure you see that so often, but it looks very convincing :) Kudos Zeb!

Thanks Mega! NMM is tough to get my head around. I'm warming up to it though. I still prefer TMM better

Progress! I have laid out the basic texture for the cliff.

Still needs sanding and filing to add some cracks and make if feel more rocky. I also did a test wave.

In the last pic the heavy gloss gel medium is still wet and opaque so I am curious to see how it turns out. I am using some tutorials I found on Colored Dust and Chest of Colors. Both great blogs, BTW. I need some input. I want to add either fire or water to the base, but they both feel very cliche.

The fire and warm OSL would be more in keeping with the scene from the movie, but the water would be fun too and would keep the OSL cool. How much artistic license should I take before it loses all reference to the fairy tale? I'll sculpt up a test piece of fire too anyway just for fun  I've also decided not to change the tail of the dragon as it would lose it's aggressive pose.
I also mode a ton of progress on the DV minis. Some good, some "a learning experience":beat-up: I finished the armour. I pushed it too far and kind of blew away most of my careful airbrushing. On the up side. I like how dark it is. It showcases the lighting really well...

I also completed the various eyes & lenses on them. They are both a yellow with a red tint and the eyes have the typical black slit. I really pushed the darkness around the eyes on the champions face to make them seem dark and menacing. Almost like the are completely black. It fits the background. Black eyes and some heavy black khol to make it look like the are empty pits...

Just a few glints on the metal, finish their bases and I will be done these guys! Then I can finish the rest of the DV box set:sick: I'll do the cultists next because once again, I need a break from power armour.

Nive WIP thread, I think you've inspired me to create my own as well. I just started working on my super dungeon explore, in part to get my mind off my bar exam studying on occasion...

Thanks Krule. I totally got excited and finished them tonight :smile-big: The gloss makes it hard to convey the effect but they look damn fine! Thank you doug, I remember doing ANYTHING to avoid exam studies. I once de-linted my carpet - by hand. Painting is better though as it gives your brain a rest and keeps your hands busy! Here's the finished Test wave...

Onto the FIRE!!!!! :bulgy-eyes:

Great looking wave, but how wet does it feel on a scale of 1-7? ^^ You're always one step ahead of me Mr.Zab Star, I'd really love to do some waves like this, keep smiling and painting man :)
*Edit*And I really like the wee blend on the skeletal sticky up parts on the axe toting guys shoulder armour :)

These tools you used for adding structure to your artificial rock... they dont sell them at the stores over here in Germany... you could get rich with selling them over here xD

Okay...back to serious: I like your Chosen ones, BUT the lightnings seem to be a bit think dont they?
The Hellbrute´s skin looks a bit unhealthy... what I like :)

What I dont like... or well... to be honest... i´m unsure if i like or dislike the wave... it somehow looks more like some crystal, so... dont know^^

Hey Warpedpath! Yeah, the lightening is a bit thick, but since these are for gaming I wanted to exaggerate them so they don't get lost from the 3 foot mark. If they were for display I'd pull back on the glow and keep them really fine. In regards to the wave, I think the shape is throwing you. It looks very stiff. Of course it was sculpted in about 5 minutes just to try out a few things. I would definitely make it more curvy and organic in the future, but for a test it's good enough. It cold also be the heavy gloss gel - makes it hard to photo, but looks great in IRL ;)

Playing with fire...

Got the fire tests done this past weekend...
This first one is great. GS is perfect for fire.

And with paint...
View attachment 21380
And here where I got burned: This technique needs way more work shaping the clear plastic to make it organic because it's just too 2d right now...
View attachment 21381
Maybe it'll look okay with paint?
View attachment 21382
Nope. Maybe I can add some depth with some washes and heavy gel like I did with the wave...
View attachment 21383
See?
View attachment 21384
Yeah, me neither. :sarcastic: I'll call this what it is: bad. Oh well, It would work for lava splashes with some more shaping and florescent paints, but for what I want? No. I think I'll stick with the GS flames and finish off the base build for sleeping chibi this week, then start painting. I found some great stuff in the garden to help me out too!

If you're going to go to the trouble of making translucent fire, may as well use it- May I suggest "priming" with a spray varnish, then using transparent paints/ inks and building it up that way? I've seen a bunch of guys do this with resin in Amazing figure modeler.. As I'm not seeing any tutorials online, I'll have to go digging through my back issues after summer classes today. And just another note, I've noticed that real fire uses more unsaturated colors for oranges and reds- so you may want to try GW Skrag Brown and Tuskgor fur rather than the brighter colors. Be back later!

Thanks Chrispy. I'd be curious to see how they do that. I've seen similar done with clear silicon sealant but never clear resin. I still prefer the painted GS anyhow. Good point about the saturation too. Finally got the Chosen and Helbrute done!
Here's a quick group shot:

Here we go:
charcoal_by_thechrispy1-d6butcn.jpg

Pic 5 just shows the initial setup of the clear resin piece (okay, so it's slightly clear-yellow). In 6 he used transparent orange and red to paint the piece, then 7 he dry brushed the dark ash colors. 8 shows what it looks like when lit and the rest are from the build up- this was "kiss the cook" in which a zombie is bbq'ing peoples. :D

Damn, that's really cool. I think if i try it gain with the clear plastic i'll just use glazes like this. Thanks for taking the time to post it for me :)

hmm for priming the clear plastic I´d say you could use some clear varnish or else your washes will run away in all directions :D
and it only looks really good if its somehow lightet... so if you dont want to build in some LED´s... stick to the FS flames, painted they look great!
