That Skull is awesome Zab, really inspirational for me. I am really thinking about making a tribute in 30mm scale of your skull :)

Thanks guys! Tero that would be insane. Please consider your well being before trying to tackle something like that o_O Mind you what's one more madman amongst our ranks? I feel sorry for the mods though. It must be like herding cats at this point.

Okay so I basecoat with steel legion, then I add a few drops of retarder to the other colors and add them one at a time in a wet on wet style.

You want the subsequent paints to be sightly translucent and unload your brush a little first.

Then apply the paint in steaks going in the same direction and twirl your brush as you drag it across the surface. The lighter the colors the thinner the veins and make sure they overlap and cross a bit too.

Once you have the general veins the way you like them you move onto the the washes, but you have to let the paint with all that medium dry first (a hair dryer will help if you are impatient).

Okay now comes the magic, take your wash and apply it in very heavy pooling streaks across your veins, again crossing and overlapping.

When you are done placing the last one rinse your brush off and unload it so it is a little damp and begin to brush up some of those pools and clean them up with the damp brush. You will find that the outer edge of the pools has already dried leaving a very natural looking vein pattern while the middle is much softer blended.

Let each color of wash dry before moving on the next one (again, hair dryer if you are impatient).

Last take a liner brush and thin down some white and drag little veins next to some of the more prominent edges of other colors :)

Carry on as you like with details after that. Mine is still a bit WIP. I need to wash some dark tones into the sculpted cracks and dry brush some rubble and add powders and the inscriptions will be a more cool grey looking color, maybe like chipped paint flaking off the marble in places.

Hope that is clear for everyone :)

That marble is awe-inspiring! And you use GW paints! I was starting to lose hope that anyone else around here did. ;)

I'm not very good at basing yet - still trying to master the sand and grass kiddies level. But I'll get there eventually and now I know where to come for a marble how-to.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks! Yeah i use mainly GW because of how easy they are to get. i like other brands too, but they are usually hard to get or have be ordered and there is nothing worse than running out of a key color in the middle of a mini and having to wait a few weeks for delivery. NEVER MIND THE EXCHANGE RATE!!! The CAD is so weak right now -_- Looks like i'll have to wait til it goes back down for that Forgeworld stuff I have been ogling...

That would definitely drive me mad! The exchange rate for the South African Rand (ZAR) is appalling at the moment! To give you an idea, the exchange rate for you is currently 1.31 CAD = 1 USD. For me it's currently 12.94 ZAR = 1 USD. It's the main reason I was asking for miniature recommendations - I really don't want to spend that kind of money on something that isn't good quality. And I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who ogles minis. :)

I also like the marble a lot! The diamond pattern is also great, but, dare I say it, I liked it best without the blacklining.

I'll admit to taking the easy way out with it. I just wasn't crisp enough without it and i didn't want o put the effort in. I just want to put this project down to be honest so i am starting to take short cuts on the path to finishing. With that in mind i will be getting rid of the box of Harlies I got. I have no desire to paint them any more. Not a fan of the way GW broke them up and molded them. Makes for hard painting if you plan patterns :( Now I get why the studio jobs were so basic and I have so much more respect for what BAM did with his.
