Zab's Damn it to hell! WIP

Hello Zab, just started reading your WIP and have a long way to go to read it all. Forgive this question for something you did in 2013;

How did you do such a subtle blush on the skin of your chibi Succubus?
I have no experience doing skin tones, and will be trying it on the arcadia quest minis, and was wondering did you do it with a wash or ink or a very thinned down paint?

no sweat gamgan, I basically took a red or a pinkish red that i liked and thinned it down to a wash. Then i load my brush and then unload most of it onto a paper towel or rag so that it is just damp with the color and not wet and apply that to the cheeks. I let each layer dry and then repeat until i get the right strength of color. I did the same thing on steampunk leia recently. It won't look like much is happening at first but be patient and let each dry before adding more. Hope that helps :)

Got my last mini prepped for the charities. Ready to prime this week.

Also picked up a 2nd place for my Harley bust and and honorable mention for my Steampunk Leia bust and Space Crusade Goblin at Heritagcon 10 today :) It was interesting.

Doubt I'll ever go to another IPMS show. Not much has changed in the decade since I went to my last one. Fantasy & scifi, shoved to the side with the kids categories and lumped all together as Misc.
Then the guy handing out the awards literally says "Honorable mention to Neil for Steampunk Leia - whatever the hell that is"
All I could think was: Thanks for the awards and the condescension asshole. I drove an hour to get here and paid to enter your shitty contest to be talked down to. I almost left without my medals because i really don't want to be reminded of negative events when i look at my minis. Oh well, back to the stuff that matters... painting!

NEVERBORN! This will be good.

And never mind the plebs, Zab. They don't understand art; and even less so that art is suffering. Or maybe he did. :p

Sounds like a bit of an a-hole to me, that Leia bust was amazing IMO and deserving of more respect than that

Looking forward to the malifaux mini :)

Cool people know what steampunk is. And pretty much everyone knows who Leia is. Therefore all the cool people in that crowd thought 'wow, what an ignorant prick' at exactly the same time.

That's some powerful brainwaves you inspired right there.

ipms is what ipms is.. over here, even if military vehicles categories are 99,9999% och the show, they really try to push and promote figure painting which is fun. but yeah, you do feel a bit out of place with basically just tanks and airplanes everywhere...

Thanks gang. I'm not upset at the military aspect or the historical aspect. I love seeing those, in fact, I voted best of show for a nice little dio of a WWI tank. And you should have seen some of the awesome candy coats on some of the model cars o_O like magic, i swear. I just wish the folks running it would maybe bring in judges for the "misc section" who know it or are at least interested in it and maybe afford us the same respect we afford them as fellow artists. At any rate, I don't have time for negative stuff with my hobby time dragging me down or draining my creative mojo so I just avoid it. No more IPMS shows for me :)

I'm excited to ship Leia off to Moe and get started on my NOVA open minis. I got some Golden hi flow transparent acrylics I want to try out a few tricks with!!! It's either gonna be super fun or you'll hear me swear all the way over where you all are ;)

Well I'm glad some people recognised your hard work and talent, even if it was in the Misc category. And dude was an ignorant peasant. We shall banish him from our thoughts with all of the energy he deserves....and gone.

Pity about the show's attitude to Sci-Fi and fantasy figures. But I'm glad there was some other cool stuff to admire. We have one painting "competition" here in SA. It's at one of the bigger gaming cons. They brought a rule in for the wargamers that they had to field fully painted armies a couple of years ago. Then last year they had a "competition". Anyone could bring minis along, but the wargamers were expected to enter at least one figure. No prizes (which is fine), but the same guy won all three categories and the only honourable mention. Seemed a bit odd to me. Hopefully this year will be better run.

Apologies for the mini-rant.

Well, sorry to hear about the contest bud. I am not sure how it sounded there, but when I read what you wrote I pictured it as some ignorant dude who literally has no idea where he is or what he is doing. Kind of like having a jock judging a cosplay contest..."Hey girl not sure who you are but dam your hot!" Lol

I would have sucker punched em in the throat, but I'm from NY.. Looking forward to hearing about how those paints work.

Great achievements ZAB they can't take that away. IMHO a guy like that in a public PR job probably talks to his dear mother the same way. I better never run into him. I could just see the rocky music in my mind as I contemplate coming out of retirement shortly for reasons I won't divulge. Bye da way sweet base already!!!

dude thats horrible that some douche bag (that you would assume was into the hobby) should talk down to any entry yet alone one judged for an honorary mention! Ob joust he doesn't know his stuff as Leia is beautiful. Congrats anyway and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the demon

People with nerdy hobbies that belittle other people's nerdy hobbies are actually a huge pet peeve of mine. I see it all the time, reenacters think they are better than LARPers, since they are 'historical' and not 'playing'. LARPers think they are better than roleplayers, since they are not 'just sitting there' and do not have 'lean on dice and rules'. And historical modellers are better than miniature painters, since it is 'history'.

YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF NERDS, get over yourselves. Do what you like, and appreciate other people's enthusiasm for their own hobbies, even if they are not yours. This is also why I like so many cosplayers I meet - they seem to appreciate what everyone else do. They like reenacters because of the costume making and craftmanship. They like LARPers because they admire the staying and acting in character. And they like miniature painters because they appreciate the art, the patience and the attention to tiny details. When I do table top demos, nobody are as close to the minis checking out the paint jobs as the cosplayers, not even the miniature game players (only the few that are serious about painting).

Bottom line is: Appreciate your fellow nerds.</rant>

lol. You can do it! Heck the last package of Malifaux I opened made me wonder if I would even be capable of assembling the little parts.

And don't worry about the jerk...all the nerds around these parts still luv ya and your awesome steampunk Leia.

And I'll second Oistene' comments. There are certain segments of the nerd hobbies that I will never understand, but I always will respect those that want to pursue them.
