Zombie Clowns!

Here is the progress on zombie #1, based upon my first ever Mad Clown sculpt, "Evil Clown". This baseball bat wielding clown was originally sculpted for a minisculpture.co.uk sculptalong along the theme of circus freaks. So, here is the original:
...and here is his zombie incarnation:
I sculpted the shoes yesterday, using vegetable oil as a lubricant. Today however I bought some Vaseline during the weekly food shop! Tonight was the turn of the legs and torso. There are some nice details such as tears and bullet holes in the clothing. These will be easier to make out once I have washed the sculpt!
I recently backed the Kickstarter by Fire For Effect Studios. Today I received my first sculpting lesson! It has been really great to get a few pointers and just to watch somebody else sculpting. There are currently just a small number of lessons available but once they are established I would thoroughly recommend you check them out:

Thanks! Glad you like the progress so far.
The Salute show in April was great, thanks! Very tiring but enjoyable all the same. Was great hanging out with the British Indie team and fellow tag-along Mike of World Of Twilight. Got lots of nice feedback on my sculpts and paint jobs too, especially my diorama (which I am still to finish and properly photograph...).
I have been invited along to stall share in 2015 too. These new sculpts are part of my show preparation! In the mean time I will do as much sculpting as I can fit in and had better get saving up for all the days expenses. It was an expensive do this year but worthwhile just for meeting plenty of like minded people!

Thanks! The secret to smooth and shiny sculpting is to use Vaseline! I apply a small blob to the back of my left hand. When I'm ready to sculpt I roll the tip of the sculpting tool in the Vaseline then wipe off the excess on the back of my hand. You only need a small amount, just keep applying it, especially when the tool starts to drag a bit. You shouldn't use too much as fresh putty wont stick. It really helps. Create the rough shape using a metal sculpting tool then smooth it out with a clay shaper. I'm finding a flat chisel ended shaper really useful at the moment.

Dang! All right. A little vaseline on the left hand is all it takes
You'd be surprised! I have been struggling along with water for too long. Using Vaseline makes a huge difference! If you are careful and use it very sparingly you can work with small pieces and very thin layers. I'll have another update to post tomorrow and you'll see how many extra layers I have added. With the clown on the left I have since built up his cheeks and chin, something I would have struggled to do as smoothly with water.

"Evil" Clown was my first Mad Clown sculpt. On the left is a primed resin cast.
Pie Clown was my first resin release and is now out of production. Here you can see the original sculpt on the left and my final remaining resin cast in the middle. This character wears an oversized mask. His zombie version is missing a hand following a nasty incident with a biter.
Sad Clown was a subsequent resin release, also now out of production. On the left you can see what remains of the original sculpt! He didn't survive the casting process intact! In the middle is my final remaining resin cast. Note that the original character holds an accordion, which was cast as a separate component.
I'm really excited about seeing the casts. Hopefully I should have the first metal casts in a few weeks!
