Hi there,
This was my major summer project, I spent a good month or so on him. Having looked at Reg's Primarchs I thought I could manage just one if he has managed to do pretty much all them. I entered him into Golden Demon 2006 and he did not get past first cut... maybe next year.
He was part of a squad and the rest I painted in a couple days compared to the month I spent on him, so were of less quality. This is probably why he did not progress? I had originally envisaged doing Leman and his bodyguard, however in the end there was just not enough time to do it well.
Anyways I now have a decent squad to play test. Leman was based on Adrian Smith's Leman and his bodyguard in Horus Heresy artwork book 3. Only based however as I kept the original head from the archive model (I painted the original model when I was twelve and shows how my style has changed over 11 years!!!). The pictures of Leman Russ in Horus Heresy all show the top half of Leman and not really his legs (perhaps John Blanches concept sketch) so I made these up.
Therefore he is not an exact copy from these books but is heavily influenced, such as the books all show him with a red sword (Mjalnar) so I gave him one. The other hand is holding onto a kinda of dog collar for Freki and Greki (I think that is their names), Leman's two wolves.
I have also included some size reference shots, as I believe a Primarch to be a bit bigger than a normal marine. He is not an absolute mutant in size but still considerably bigger than a marine.
Hope you like my vision of Leman Russ... Any comments would be appreciated.

Chrome 13-Jun-07 #226738 | | Rating: 9 Awesome mini. tho according to horus heresy literature the primarchs towered over astartes like astartes towered over humans. and the emperor were even larger according to the same text. so he wasnt just a bit larger since a normal human being is about 1.80 and an astartes is 2.50. (generalising) and i do remember that Leman Russ used a spear which he left behind when he left and promised to return for the wolftime. so, a halberd isnt further from the truth than any sword. perhaps even closer.
But i love what youve done with this mini! lots of feeling in the pose and youve gotten the expression of his face very menacing which is cool. quite love that breastplate and i think i shall try to implement it on my own minis some time. id love some better close-ups of that sword, cant really identify all the bits.
and for finals, this mini not passing even the first cut really shows how hard it actually is to get a hold of that demon. keep it up! |

Cheers! | |
