The Gatehouse of Edoras
The Gatehouse of Edoras was my very first serious terrain piece. I built it back in 2003 and was very happy with the results (and still am). The model is constructed in three main pieces and comes apart for easy transportation. The roof lifts off to allow models to be placed in the central tower, and the front panels of the two side towers are hinged for the same reason. The gates are also hinged to allow models to pass through. The model is fully intended as a playable piece and the materials used in its construction, although fairly delicate, are quite resistant to damage. The gateway itself is designed to be just wide enough to prohibit a single powerful character from blocking it on his own, so two or more defenders are required to bar the entrance should the gates have been bettered down. The steps are designed to enable models to be placed at any point along the length without falling over, and all doorways are wide enough for a 25mm base to pass through. These sorts of gaming compromises often destroy the look and feel of a piece, especially one that is based on a recognisable location or building, so I was very pleased that the end result still managed to look pretty accurate.
