Colossal Red Dragon

I just finished up another set of trophies for the D&D Miniatures Constructed Championship going on at Gen Con Indy 2006. This is the 1st place prize. This guy pretty much tested every painting skill that I've picked up over the last 5 years. The rocks are resin casts of a homemade mold. Part of the wing was added. The wings originally were clear so they were painted with semi-translucent paints allowing light to shine through like a real wing -- cotton threads were embedded in the wing to mimic veins. The actual boney parts of the wing were first painted black, then white, and then red to make sure that light wouldn't pass through so you see the bright wing surrounded by the dark bones, etc. I improved a bit on my airbrushing techniques, the ochre scales were wet-blended from a brown to yellow ochre to bone, etc... This was finished in July 2006. It's about 14 inches tall.

Absolutely Gorgeous! I so wish I could have seen this in person when you had it at Misty. The difference between yours and the "off the shelf" one is night and day. I agreee with the earlier post that it is too monochromatic. Keep up the good work. ~Van~

It's great that you did this! I found the official guy pretty disappointing when I got a look at him, he seemed way too monochromatic. This one is superb, really fierce looking, and the painting on the stomach scales is particularly fine.
