Jellyfish (painted prototype)
This is a resin cast of the green I posted in the beginning of June 2003. This was painted in mid June 2003. The tentacles were painted in a bluish-gray highlighted up to white, and the oral arms (the inner "tentacles") were painted brown to white, but those are on the other side of this picture. At this point, the completely clear bell really looked out of place on the top of the figure, so the whole thing was given a wash in blue ink and that's why the bell is blue and not clear. In the end, I think it's a bit of a disaster. The blue gray mixes too much with the grey of the rock, the pearlesant shell on the other side of the rock looks horrible, I always think inking looks messy, and the sculpture makes it look like the jellyfish is "walking" and not floating. I don't think the coiled up mass of tentacles really worked out, but I'm not sure how else I could do it and still have a figure that could be put into a production mold. Finally, the ground is supposed to look like the ocean floor, and I don't think that worked either -- it's probably my worse base in the past two years. I'm thinking of sculpting a new version, and using brass wires for the tentacles. A friend (wombats on CMoN) suggested to stick the wire into a drill and taper it on some rough sandpaper or other surface, and I think that sounds like a good idea. It certainly would have helped with the roper figures. Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Please tell me things you like and don't like. Also, any ideas on how to make a next version?
