Rat Ogre

This figure is a Rat Ogre from the Island of Blood Boxed set and was my entry for Warhammer Monster in Golden Demon UK 2010. It's not a heavily converted figure though I decided to use the larger head from the other Rat Ogre in the set. I did resculpt a few areas of fur and added the manacle around his ankle. I also sculpted an area on the side of his head where his skull is showing through with a blank eyesocket though I couldn't get a decent picture. The minute I saw the first photo of this miniature I knew I had to paint it for GD and it's probably my favourite miniature release of the year so far from GW. My main plan, as it was an low-conversion figure was to produce a base that created a setting and told a bit of a story. You can see that he has broken free of his bonds with the broken chain and the post he was chained to. A human captive, imprisoned beneath the floor in a dungeon has heard the commotion above and has tried desperately to find out if he's being rescued. He's about to discover this is definitely not the case... I hollowed this section of the base and put the arm (taken from a corpse cart corpse) sticking through the bars. Below the surface I added a Flagellant head staring upwards painted to look as though he's in darkness with the light just catching the upper surfaces of his nose and brow. Tough to get a photo but I've tried. The figure took just over twenty hours to paint and the flesh was well over half of that time. From a basecoat mix of Calthan Brown and Mechrite Red, I then started highlighting with a mix of bestial brown and dwarf flesh highlighting up to dwarf flesh pure and then adding bleached bone up to pure highlights again. Then there were a LOT of tactical glazes of a midtone to smooth things out followed by many more glazes in the recesses with bestial brown and sometimes scorched brown to add definition and warmth to the shading. Felt like forever... The figure took the silver demon in it's category and I'm very happy with that.
